COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou wrestling redshirt sophomore Lavion Mayes was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 19 - 25, as announced today by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) office. The Mascoutah, Ill. native improved to 24-1 this season after earning a pair of wins this past weekend, including a triumph over No. 18 Dean Heil (Oklahoma State).
The honor marks Mayes' first career MAC Wrestler of the Week recognition. Overall, the Tigers have brought home five conference Wrestler of the Week awards in 2014-15. Past winners included redshirt senior Drake Houdashelt (Dec. 8-14), sophomore J'den Cox (Nov. 24-30 and Dec. 29 - Jan. 4) and redshirt senior Alan Waters (Oct. 27 - Nov. 9).
Mayes kicked off his undefeated weekend last Friday, Jan. 23 against No. 18 Dean Heil. His 8-4 decision victory over Heil propelled Mizzou to a big 22-10 win over No. 7 Oklahoma State, and improved the Tigers to a perfect 16-0 this season. Two days later on Sunday, Jan. 25, Mayes cruised to a 6-1 decision win over Tyler Argue (Northern Illinois).
Overall this season, Mays has accumulated four wins over ranked opponents en route to his current No. 6 ranking in the country at 141 pounds.
No. 3 Mizzou wrestling closes out the month on Saturday, Jan. 31 against MAC foe Northern Iowa. Action at the Hearnes Center is set for a 7 p.m. (CT) start, and can be seen online for free at MizzouNetwork.com.
