Mizzou Soccer Posts 3-1 Victory Over SMU

Aug. 31, 2014

DALLAS - Freshman Savannah Trujillo scored two goals and junior Reagan Russell added another as the Mizzou soccer team posted a 3-1 win over SMU Sunday night in Dallas, Texas. With the win in goal, redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein broke Missouri's career wins record with 36. She entered the match tied with former Tiger Tasha Dittamore at 35.

The Tigers improved to 2-1-1 on the year with the victory, while the Mustangs fell to 1-3.

Senior Kaysie Clark earned assists on two of Missouri's three goals to put her season total at four.

Less than nine minutes into the match Russell put Mizzou on the board with her first goal of the season. The junior passed up to senior Kaysie Clark on the right side of the box. Clark then played the ball back to Russell, stationed six-yards from net, who calmly one-timed the pass into the back of the net.

Junior Macee Blanchard seemed poised to up Mizzzou's lead to 2-0 with a blast left-footed blast in the 40th minute. However, her attempt bounced off the right post and dribbled in front of the net, allowing SMU to clear the ball.

Just two minutes later, the Mustangs evened the score at 1-1 on a well-executed set piece. Taylor Barg lofted a corner into the box that Claire Oates headed over Sauerwein's head and into the back of the net.

Trujillo tallied her first career goal in the 51st minute on deft passing in SMU's defensive third. Clark sent a cross into the box that fell right at the feet of Trujillo, who easily tapped her shot past the Mustang keeper and into the net.

The post claimed another near Tiger goal in the 60th minute. Freshman Kaitlyn Clark sent a perfect cross six yards in front of the net. The ball found the head of Grant but her chance clanged off the left post.

Trujillo was in the right place at the right time to give Mizzou an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Russell had a breakaway on goal but the SMU goalie knocked the ball away. Russell recovered to corral the loose ball and back-heeled a pass across the goalmouth to Trujillo, who one-timed the shot into the net.

The Tigers outshot the Mustangs 22-10 in the match, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.

Missouri opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday, Sept. 5 against Northwestern at 7 p.m. in a match broadcast live on SEC Network +. Mizzou then hosts UT Martin on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
