FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Taylor Grant scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 92nd minute, as the Mizzou soccer team earned a 2-1 overtime victory over TCU Friday night in Fort Worth, Texas. The Tigers improved to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Horned Frogs fell to 1-2-0.
With the match knotted at 1-1 in overtime, Grant received a ball in the box and dodged a defender. She tapped a shot toward net that lightly bounced off the right post and dribbled over the line to give Mizzou the win. TCU's keeper made a diving attempt to stop the ball but did not arrive in time.
Grant's tallies were her third and fourth of the season, just one off her single-season career high of five set in 2013. She now has 15 goals and 36 points in her Tiger career.
In goal, redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein earned the 35th win of her career, tying Tasha Dittamore's school record.
Neither squad could convert on opportunities in the first half despite a number of chances. Missouri outshot TCU 9-5 in the first frame, including three shots on goal, but the Horned Frog keeper saved all three.
Mizzou's offensive pressure increased at the start of the second half, keeping the ball in TCU's defensive half. After a few close calls, the Tigers final broke the scoreless tie in the 55th minute off perfect passing.
Junior Reagan Russell sent a ball toward the middle of the pitch that freshman Jessica Johnson one-timed up the field. The pass found Grant, who raced into the box and unleashed an eight-yard rocket into the upper right netting for a 1-0 Tiger advantage.
The Tigers held their 1-0 edge until the 69th minute when the Horned Frogs finally got on the board. Junior Candace Johnson was whistled for a penalty kick on a TCU player after tough defending in the box. TCU's Jill Finnerty stepped up and put her attempt past Sauerwein for a 1-1 game.
The score remained 1-1 through the end of regulation and two minutes until overtime when Grant's goal gave the Tigers the win.
Missouri returns to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 31 against SMU at 7 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.
