COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou (20-32) couldn't get the offense going against No. 24 Arkansas (34-21), dropping Friday night's (May 16) contest by a 4-0 final to the visiting Razorbacks at Taylor Stadium. The Tigers had only three hits in the game, none after the third inning, as they were shut out by Arkansas. Dylan Kelly (Roswell, Ga.) legged out a double in the bottom of the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 10 games and tying him for the team lead in doubles on the season.
Peter Fairbanks (St. Louis, Mo.) was solid in his start, striking out three and allowing seven hits as he pitched into the sixth inning. All four runs off Fairbanks came with two outs, all four in the fifth and sixth innings. Fairbanks still has now allowed only five earned runs in his last 20.2 innings on the mound.
Arkansas left fielder Joe Serrano shot a double to left with one out in the first, but Fairbanks responded by inducing a flyout and striking out Brian Anderson to get out of the frame unharmed. Fairbanks settled in after the first, allowing only one hit through the next three frames and holding the Razorbacks off the board through that time.
Josh Lester (Columbus, Ga.) reached to start the bottom of the fourth, the third Tiger runner to reach in the game, though the Tigers were held scoreless as they stranded Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) and Logan Pearson (Bentonville, Ark.), who reached on a hit by pitch. The Razorbacks struck in the fifth, getting four straight two-out hits to claim a 3-0 edge. Serrano's double and Andrew Benintendi drove in the runs for the visitors, though Benintendi was thrown out trying to reach second on his RBI single.
The Razorbacks chased Fairbanks from the game in the sixth as Bobby Wernes tallied a two-out RBI single to give Arkansas a 4-0 lead and giving Breckin Williams (Oronogo, Mo.) the ball on the mound. Williams tossed a scoreless seventh, then worked around a two-out single in the eighth inning as he held the gap at four. The Tigers couldn't score, though, and fell 4-0.
