Columbia, Mo. - Mizzou Women's Basketball improved to 10-2 on the season with Monday's 74-65 win over UT Martin. Mizzou was led by senior Morgan Eye who finished the game with 21 points off 6-for-15 shooting from distance. Sophomore Jordan Frericks earned her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds to contribute to Mizzou's win.
The Tigers and the Skyhawks were off to a fast start on Monday night, the Tigers kicked things off with three straight triples, two coming from Eye and one from Lindsey Cunningham. The Tigers were hot from distance in the half, shooting just under 50-percent. Eye took the lead, going 4-for-7 in the half to lead all scorers with 12 points going into the break.
Mizzou led for much of the half, but the Skyhawks were relentless, finally taking a 38-36 lead going into the break. UTM shot almost 43-percent from the field in the first half, using the free throw line to their advantage as well. The Skyhawks made 8-of 10 free throws, only sending Mizzou to the line twice. Both teams were evenly matched in the paint, tallying eight first-half points. The Tigers cleaned up on the glass, however, out-rebounding the Skyhawks 21-18. The Tigers grabbed nine offensive boards to UTM's four.
The Skyhawks came out ready to go in the second half, pulling ahead right off the bat. The Tigers kept it close however, thanks to leadership from Eye. The Montrose, Mo., native, was in her zone as she continued to make contact from distance. Eye finished with six threes on the night, and she's got to make just 75 more this season to break the NCAA Career Record. Eye used her hot shooting to tie the game at 54 with a triple, and put the Tigers on top for good with a foul shot. Eye combined with the Stock sisters to take the Tigers on a 13-0 run that secured the lead in the game. Mizzou held UT Martin to just 32-percent shooting in the second half, allowing only 8-of-25 field goal attempts.
The Tigers will host Missouri State on Dec. 30 in a contest at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. Tickets are available for purchase at www.SprintCenter.com. For more information on Mizzou Women's Basketball, follow the team on Twitter (@MizzouWBB).
