Carly Kan Earns AVCA All-Southeast Region Honors

Dec. 9, 2014

Kan earns AVCA All-Region honors for the second consecutive season.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou sophomore outside hitter Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii) earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Southeast Region honors for the second consecutive season, as announced by the AVCA on Tuesday (Dec. 9). Kan, an honorable mention AVCA All-American a year ago, is now guaranteed at least another honorable mention All-America finish as she will be in consideration for one of the three AVCA All-America teams. Mizzou has now had 20 AVCA All-Region selections since Wayne and Susan Kreklow took over the program in 2000, nine of which have come since 2010.

"Obviously this is great news for Carly and for our program," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "Carly had a very difficult job as she took over as our primary swing this year and was asked to do a lot. She was also one of our two primary passers and one of our best defenders in the back row. I was proud of the way that she handled the increased pressure and workload this season and I am really happy that she is being recognized as one of the top players in our region. It is very well-deserved."

"This is an awesome honor," Kan said. "Last year, I was able to just come in and just play but this year was definitely an adjustment as more teams keyed on me, so to be recognized means a lot. I couldn't have done it without my teammates. They are always putting me in good positions and I owe a lot of this to them. Also, the coaches. We have some of the best here at Mizzou and I have learned so much in my two years here."

After a breakout season that saw Kan earn SEC Freshman of the Year and AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year in 2013, Kan was again dynamic in 2014. She led the SEC with 19 double-doubles, matching the school record for double-doubles in the 25-point set era. Her 19 double-doubles are also the most by a Tiger outside hitter since Jessica Vander Kooi had 20 in 2006. Not only that, but Kan was the only player in the SEC to finish the year averaging at least 3.00 kills per set and 3.00 digs per set. She also led the nation with her combined 812 kills and digs while putting up the Tigers' best passing numbers, despite passing a team-high 993 balls (30 per match).

Additionally, Kan finished the year with 418 kills, making her the first four-year Tiger since 2008 to post back-to-back seasons of 300 kills or more to open a career. Her 801 kills over the last two seasons are the most by any four-year Tiger to open a career. She tallied double-digit kills in 25 of 33 matches and double-digit digs in 23 of 33 matches.
