Mizzou, West Virginia Agree to Two-Year Football Series

Nov. 7, 2014

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri and West Virginia University have agreed to a two-year home-and-home football series, as announced jointly today by both schools. Mizzou will travel to Morgantown, W.V., for a Sept. 3, 2016 season opener, while the Mountaineers will return the game in Columbia, Mo. on Sept. 7, 2019.

The series will mark the first game between the programs since the 1998 Insight.com Bowl in Tucson, Ariz., when Mizzou claimed a 34-31 win to cap an eight-win season. That win gave Mizzou a 3-2 lead in the alltime series, which included home-and-home series in 1926-1927 and again in 1993-1994. The Tigers won the first two games via shutout, claiming a 27-0 win in Morgantown in 1926, followed by a 13-0 whitewashing in Columbia in 1927. The Mountaineers evened the series nearly 70 years later by taking a 35-3 win in Morgantown in 1993, coupled with a 34-10 triumph in Columbia in 1994.

“We are very pleased to add a team the caliber of West Virginia to our schedule,” said Executive Associate Athletic Director Bryan Maggard, who oversees football scheduling. “We feel like this is a game that is appealing to the fan bases of both programs, and it helps us both add high-profile non-conference games to our schedules. We're excited to have a chance to work together, and appreciate everyone coming together to make this happen on all sides,” he said.
