The Tigers enter the upcoming season with high expectations and have consistently been tabbed in preseason top-10 polls. Most recently, in the first edition of the USA Today / NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, Mizzou came in at No. 6 overall.
Head Coach Brian Smith begins his 17th season with Mizzou wrestling and brings back a talent rich lineup for the 2014-15 campaign. Three All-Americans (Alan Waters '13, Drake Houdashelt '13 & '14 and J'den Cox '14) and seven total NCAA qualifiers from a year ago (Matt Manley, Lavion Mayes, Houdashelt, Joey Lavallee, Mikey England, Cox, and Devin Mellon) give the Tigers one of the deeper teams in the country.
The three headed monster of Cox, Houdashelt and Waters stand as one of the most formidable trios in the NCAA. Cox, the defending National Champion at 197 pounds, has consistently been ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in his weight class entering the season, while Houdashelt and Waters are consensus top-5 to top-10 grapplers in their respective weight classes.
Mizzou has taken home three straight conference titles (2012 - Big 12, 2013 & 2014 - MAC) and are once again seen as the favorites this season in the Mid-American Conference. In the preseason MAC coaches' poll, Tiger Style received 27 points which edged out Old Dominion's 18 points.
In the individual MAC preseason rankings, nine Tiger grapplers were ranked in the top-4 in their respective weight classes, led by Waters, Houdashelt, Cox, and Mellon garnering first place recognition.
