Mizzou Advances to NCAA Second Round with 3-1 Win over Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Taylor Grant tallied two goals and junior Reagan Russell added another as the Mizzou soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over Kansas Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. The Tigers will face Washington on Friday, Nov. 21 in Stanford, Calif.
The Tigers improved to 12-6-3 on the season, while the Jayhawks ended the year with a 15-6 record.
Missouri was on the attack from the first whistle and wasted no time scoring the first goal of the match. Junior Reagan Russell sent a long cross from the right side of the field to the far post. Grant, stationed near the post, chested the ball down into the net from a yard out for a 1-0 Tiger advantage.
The Tigers kept on the attack the rest of the first half, with good chances from freshman Kaitlyn Clark, senior Kaysie Clark, but could not tack an another goal.
Grant stuck again early in the second half for a 2-0 Mizzou advantage in the 51st minute. Senior Kaysie Clark played up a perfect pass to Grant, who ran onto the ball at the top of the box. The Kansas keeper came off her line but Grant took a touch and sent a low shot past the goalkeeper and into the lower left netting for her team leading ninth goal of the season.
A goal from the Jayhawks in the 57th minute cut Mizzou's lead to 2-1 to give Kansas some hope. The game went back and forth for the next nine minutes before the Tigers once again took advantage of an offensive opportunity to again gain a two-goal edge.
In the 66th minute, Russell ran down the right sideline, ran into the box and slotted a low shot from 10-yards out into the far post for a 3-1 Missouri lead. The goal was the seventh of the year for Russell to put her season point total to 18. Grant earned her second assist of the year and fifth point of the match on the play.
After Mizzou's third tally, the Tigers took control of the action once again, holding possession to keep the Jayhawks off the board in the final 24 minutes of regulation.
The Tigers had a 21-16 in shots, including a 10-6 edge in the opening 45 minutes. Missouri also earned 11 corners and did not allow Kansas any corners.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein made seven saves in goal, including a pair of diving stops.
