STANFORD, Calif. - No. 24 Washington scored 1:03 into overtime to end the Mizzou soccer team's NCAA Tournament run with a 1-0 loss to the Huskies in the second round on Friday, Nov. 21 in Stanford, Calif. The Tigers and Huskies played 91 minutes of scoreless soccer before Washington ended Mizzou's season in extra time.
Mizzou concluded the season with a 12-7-3 record, while Washington improved to 14-6-2.
"It was a back and forth game and Washington had a really good chance and finished it," Missouri Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "I couldn't be more proud of our team, they really fought the whole game. We had a great season. I think this experience will help us focus moving forward."
Early in the first overtime session, Washington's Kimberly Keever made a run down the left flank, cut into the box and unleashed a right-footed attempt toward goal. The shot flew over redshirt senior keeper McKenzie Sauerwein's arms and into the right side netting for the winner.
The Huskies had a 17-10 edges in shots, although second half saw both squads send five attempts on net.
Sauerwein, who set Mizzou's all-time games started record with the 83rd start of her four-year career in the match, recorded three saves during the contest.
Washington opened play with a trio of shots in the first three minutes but Mizzou settled down as play went back and forth. Senior Kaysie Clark got the ball at her feet in the midfield and made strong runs into the box midway through the first half. She sent three chances toward goal but two flew wide and one was saved by the Washington goalkeeper.
The Tigers started the second half strong, earning a number of corners early in the frame. In the 54th minute, Clark found fellow senior Taylor Grant near the left post. Grant had the keeper beaten but her shot was blocked away at the goalline by a defender to keep Missouri off the board.
Play went back and forth over much of the second half, until the Tigers again exerted their will in the waning minutes of regulation. However, shots from both Kaysie and Kaitlyn Clark were blocked at the top of the box to send the match into extra time, setting up Washington's golden goal.
