Mizzou vs. William Jewell October 29, 2014
HEAD COACH ANDERSON
Opening Statement....
"The two things that we really wanted to do was to play hard and play good defense. I think we did a pretty good job. We had a little let down right before half. We were kind of disheveled and had guys not quite sure what they were doing. In the second half they only made three field goals, and that's pretty good. I was proud of our defensive effort, and I was more proud of how hard we played. When the gun went off I had to hold them back the last 28 seconds to make sure they didn't try to score."
On Missouri's Offense and Shot Selection....
"I was pretty happy with the shot selection in the first half. I think we were nervous. I think these guys were trying so hard. For example the first couple plays we came out and bobbled the ball. It was our first game and we were just trying to do things so fast. I thought we were nervous. I thought in the second half that Tramaine stepped up and made some shots. I think guys that affected this game more than the stat sheet shows are guys like D'Angelo Allen. I thought he really had high energy. We always talk about having energy. I think Deuce did a really good job. Shamburger scored maybe a bucket, but I thought he played really well. Different guys stepped up and played, and that's what we've got to have. I think we learned as the game went on. It was a 30-9 game, and then we gave up 8 points. We talked about that at half time a lot."
On Missouri's players coming off the bench..........
"If guys keep coming off the bench playing like that then yes [he will continue to sub in and out]. I thought in the first half we were a little disjointed. We didn't fit together real well, but I thought in the second half we relaxed. I just think we were nervous. I think both teams were nervous."
On Missouri's Aggressiveness..........
"I liked the aggressiveness of the whole team. I told them going into the game if there's a ball on the floor and you don't dive for it, then keep running right over and sit by me. There was one play where we dove after the ball, and I thought it ignited our team and ignited the crowd. I was proud of them then. We talk about energy, enthusiasm, and commitment every day. I thought we brought great energy tonight."
On how it felt to be out there playing in a game setting....
"It was awesome getting back out there. We were getting sick of playing each other all day. Playing against Keanau (Post) and all our big sweaty guys. It was good to play a game with refs and stuff. I thought what we wanted to emphasize was good; we had a lot of new guys so it was a good opportunity to get out there and get the jitters out of the way and just try to get used to playing with each other in a real game setting.
On how the team has been successful at rebounding...
"We talk about that every day, trying to get offensive rebounds, get extra possessions. We felt that today, since we were a little bigger than them, that it was definitely an area where we could just get more possessions and more shots. That's going to be a big thing for us this year and that's just part of playing hard and giving the extra effort to get this offensive boards. "
On how getting Jonathan Williams III back will help....
"He brings a lot more rebounds, a lot of leadership as well. He brings a lot to the team"
On his confidence this year...
"Me and coach talk a lot, he just gives me motivation to be better and do better and to focus. I have a little bit more confidence and focus."
On playing with three guards...
"We practice it a lot, playing with two other point guards. They are both great shooters so it makes it easier for me because the team can spread out and play more against the shooters so it makes it easier for me to drive. So it actually makes it easier for me out there having two other point guards.
On his freshman teammates play....
"They all played hard, I saw them diving on the floor as Namon Wright did in the last five minutes. They got a lot of offensive rebounds, I appreciate everything they gave."
