ATHENS, Ga. - Mizzou tennis began competition today at the 2014 Bulldog Tennis Classic, hosted by Georgia women's tennis. In the 32-player singles draw, senior Alex Clark claimed a first round victory over Lipscomb's Melissa Kromer (7-5, 6-2).
Freshman Brianna Lashway received a first round bye in singles play and competed later Friday afternoon. After winning the first set, the Bradenton, Fla. native dropped the following two sets and lost to Wisconsin's Maria Avgerinos (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Clark also matched up with a Wisconsin Badger in her second round contest. In another close battle, the London, England native fell to Lauren Chypyha in consecutive sets (7-5, 7-5). Both Clark and Lashway now move to the singles consolation bracket with matches starting tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Lashway is set to play against Lipscomb's Kathryn Evans in consolation play, while Clark squares off against Lipscomb's Deahna Welcher.
In doubles play, Clark and Lashway went up against a freshmen duo from Georgia. In another back and forth match, the Tigers duo ended up falling to Mariana Gould and Ellen Perez, 8-6. Doubles round-robin play continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
