WALNUT, Calif. - Day two in California saw the mid-distance and distance groups split between two of the weekend's premier meets, the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational. As the teams prepare to enter their final day of competition on the west coast on Saturday, they have already accrued 15 personal record (PR) performances, a pair of All-Time Top Ten marks from freshman Tyler Schneider and junior Courtney Wood, and a new Bryan Clay Invitational Meet Record for the 5000-meter run from freshman Evan Chiplock.
"I was really pleased with the efforts we saw across the board these first two days," Joe Lynn, assistant coach in charge of the mid-distance and distance group, said. "Lots of people are stepping up to the competition and doing what we set out to do on this trip."
The Mt. SAC Relays started the day off for the black and gold with freshman Kayla Wolf's 1500-meter run debut. She placed 25th in the field with a final time fo 4:27.04, the fastest for the Tigers this season. Following her performance was another career debut in the 1500-meters from fellow-freshman T.J. Carey, who ran the second-fastest time this season for the Tigers, 3:49.58.
Notching in just above Carey in the 1500-meter run was Sam Dickerson, who crossed with a 3:46.16 PR at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the fastest time for a Tiger thus far this season.
"Sam ran an amazing 1500-meters tonight," Lynn said. "He's shown a great deal of maturity and focus these last few months and is really putting together a nice string of races as we move towards the championship portion of the season."
The teams then switched over to the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., where Chiplock had the first of several impressive PR's in the 5000-meter run Friday evening. He won the event with his 14:26.56 career best, breaking the previous meet record from 2008 by six seconds.
Back at Mt. SAC, Wood made her first appearance since her No. 2 All-Time 3000-meter Steeplechase performance at Alabama, where she raced to a 10:28.20 PR finish. She took to the line for her first 5000-meter run on the track for the Tigers on Friday night, making yet another All-Time Top Ten list after crossing in 16:36.55 for sixth in the section, No. 9 All-Time. Close behind was freshman Kaitlyn Fischer who placed 12th in 16:45.80.
Also breaking the 17-minute barrier in the women's 5000-meter run was sophomore Maria Effinger, who ran to a 12-second PR to place fifth in her section with a final time of 16:55.21.
"The whole group of 5k ladies ran with poise and focus this evening," Lynn said. "Seeing Courtney, Kaitlyn, and Maria run with the confidence they did throughout their heats was a lot of fun. And for our young group who is developing at a great rate, they are going to be doing some great things for us in the very near future."
In the men's 5000-meter, Schneider made the day's second All-Time Top Ten performance with his third-place finish in the section. This was Schneider's debut in the event while donning the black and gold, and he crossed in 14:08.11 to claim the No. 4 spot in the Mizzou Record Books.
"Tyler ran a fearless race," Lynn said. "I've never seen him run out of his comfort zone like we saw tonight. For a freshman to be sub-14:10, he has a lot to look forward to in the future and we have a lot to be excited about."
The excitement will continue into Saturday for the Tigers as the team closes out their time in California at the Beach Invitational while another group travels to Edwardsville, Ill., for the Gateway Invitational.
