CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Taylor Gohn (Columbus, Ind.) shot an even par 72 to lead the Mizzou women's golf team as it finished 16th overall among a field that includes seven nationally-ranked teams on day one of the 11th Annual Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., on Sunday (Sept. 8). In all, Mizzou shot a 14-over 302 on Sunday, led by Gohn's 72. Mississippi State leads the event, which is held on the par-72, 6,204-yard Yeaman Hall Golf Club, after firing a first-round score of 282, good for six-under.
"Taylor had a great start for us with her 72," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "She really gave herself a lot of opportunities to be even lower, but just missed on some birdies. The course sets up well for us and over the next two days so we just need to connect on more of those birdie chances. This event is filled with great teams and individual players so it will be fun to be a part of it the next two days."
Aside from Gohn's 72, the Tigers also got a great first round from junior Alina Rogers (Toronto, Ontario) who shot a three-over 75 in the opening round. Katherine Hepler (Lincoln, Ill.) finished third among the Tiger golfers on Sunday with a five-over 77 and sophomore Michelle Butler (Dunedin, Fla.) shot a 78. Sophomore Haelena Schwemmer (O'Fallon, Mo.) rounded out the Tiger players with a seven-over 79 Sunday. Both Gohn and Rogers rank among the top 50 after round one at 19th and 47th, respectively.
Gohn's 72 was aided thanks to her par-5 performance on Sunday as she went 2-under on Par 5s, the ninth-best total on par 5s on Sunday. Also worth noting was Rogers, who finished with 14 pars on Sunday, the seventh-best total in the field.
