Missouri Golf is one of 12 nationally-ranked programs competing at this weekend's Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championship on St. Simons Island, Ga., and the No. 32 Tigers are in ninth place after the first round of competition, led by junior Hunter Kraus.
The 2013 SEC Men's Golf Championship is being played on the Par 70, 6,991-yard Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club. The 54-hole event will continue on Saturday morning with 18 holes and conclude Sunday. Rounds begin each morning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Few collegiate golf conferences can match the overall competitiveness of the SEC (12 of 14 teams ranked) and the Tigers have equated themselves well through 18 holes owning leads over No. 36 Vanderbilt, No. 14 Arkansas, No. 23 Tennessee and No. 9 Florida. Missouri was steady in its play across the board and have all-four scorers ranked among the Top 35 after one round.
Junior Hunter Kraus is leading the Tigers after shooting an opening-round 71. The 1-over-par score has Kraus tied for 19th and just one shot outside the Top 12. The Memphis, Tenn., native was even-par through his first 15 holes and countered a pair of bogeys with a birdie on his final three holes.
Emilio Cuartero is second among Tigers and 30th overall with a 3-over-par 73. Cuartero had 15 pars and three bogeys and continues to close his junior season well after finishing second at last week's Mizzou Intercollegiate.
Jace Long and Jacob Fair are tied for 35th at 4-over. Long battled back from back-to-back double-bogeys to remain in contention, while Fair was steady all morning recording 14 pars and four bogeys.
Ryan Zech is one shot behind Long and Fair with a 5-over 75.
No. 19 Auburn (275) holds and early four-shot lead over No. 30 South Carolina (279). No. 13 Georgia is third (281), while No. 2 Alabama (283) and No. 21 Texas A&M (285) round out the Top Five.
South Carolina's Caleb Sturgeon (-5) owns a one-shot lead over three players. Sturgeon had five birdies and zero bogeys in his opening round to shoot 65.
The second round of the 2013 SEC Championships continues tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT.
