PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 5 seed Dom Bradley clinched All-America honors by advancing to the heavyweight semifinals with a 5-3 victory over Arizona State's Levi Cooper. Bradley will face top seeded Zachery Rey of Lehigh later tonight, with the winner advancing to tomorrow night's finals. As a team, the Tigers stand in 16th place with 22.5 points.
Bradley wrestled his best match of the tournament thus far, as he scored a takedown in the second and third periods. He controlled the action, taking numerous shots on Cooper throughout the match to advance. Bradley lost his match earlier this season to Rey, losing by a 3-2 decision in the first tiebreaker.
Senior Todd Schavrien dropped his quarterfinal match to No. 2 Michael Thorn of Minnesota, losing by fall in 2:03. The two were battling in the first period, with Thorn going ahead with a quick takedown. Schavrien escaped and scored a takedown of his own, but Thorn reversed it and put Schavrien in a headlock, eventually sticking him to the mat for the pin. Schavrien will face Oregon State's Mike Mangrum tonight in the consolation round, and if he wins he'll secure his first career All-America honors.
The first half of the session wasn't so kind to the Tigers, as six grapplers saw their tournament run come to an end.
Junior Dorian Henderson and sophomore Brent Haynes kept their tournament alive with wins in the first round of consolations this morning. Henderson topped Ohio's Nick Purdue with a 7-6 win, using three third period takedowns to come out ahead. Haynes trailed 4-2 after the first period against No. 10 Logan Brown (Purdue), but took Brown and rode him out in the second before scoring two more takedowns in the third, giving him the 9-6 win.
However, they both dropped heartbreakers in their second match of the day, ending their tournament. Henderson, down 2-1 but with riding time locked up, gave up a late takedown to Hofstra's Ryan Patrovich and lost 4-2. Haynes had a 2-1 lead in the second period when he got hit with a penalty point and gave up an escape to fall behind 3-2. Haynes had over two minutes of riding time heading to the third, where he chose bottom, but Joseph Kennedy of Lehigh rode him out.
Freshman Alan Waters, sophomore Nathan McCormick and redshirt freshmen Kyle Bradley and Zach Toal all saw their first NCAA Championships come to an end in the morning. Waters fell to Old Dominion's James Nicholson, the No. 4 wrestler in the class, by an 8-3 decision.
McCormick dropped a hard-fought match with No. 12 Kyle Hutter, also of Old Dominion, losing 8-4. Bradley dropped a heartbreaker, as he was victim of a defensive pin with just 11 seconds left in the match. Down 4-2, Bradley landed a reversal late in the match, but Hutter worked underneath and was able to get Bradley's back exposed over the top of him. Toal lost 2-1 to Penn's Stephen Burak, who worked an escape and collected riding time in the victory.
Schavrien and Bradley will be back in action tonight at 6 p.m. CT when Session IV begins. Check in to nwcaonline.com and mutigers.com for more information.
