LOS ANGELES – USC pounded out 14 hits against six Missouri pitchers en route to a 9-3 win Saturday afternoon at the USC Tournament at Dedeaux Field.
USC took an early lead in the second with three straight hits off freshman lefty Rob Zastryzny (Corpus Christi, Texas / Calallen), and tallied a key two-run Garret Houts single to jump to a 3-0 advantage. The Trojans added two unearned runs in the fourth on a two-out booted grounder to third and a dropped fly to center. Zastryzny (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers (1-1).
Mizzou banged three doubles in the fifth to get three runs back. Sophomore C Andreas Plackis (St. Charles, Mo. / West) reached on an infield throwing error, then advanced to second on a grounder to first. Sophomore RF Blake Brown (Normal, Ill. / West) and senior Jesse Santo (Little Falls, N.J. / Passaic Valley HS / East Okla. State) followed with back-to-back doubles to score a pair, and after a grounder by sophomore CF Brannon Champagne (St. Charles, Mo. / West HS), senior DH Jonah Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo. / Chaminade Prep) doubled Santo home.
USC (1-0) got a run back in its half of the fifth, then blew the game open in the eighth with the help of three hits to open the inning off senior righty Brad Buehler (Festus, Mo. / St. Pius X).
Brown was one of the Tigers' offensive bright spots again, going 2-for-3 for the second straight game with a run and RBI. Schmidt also added his first two hits of the season.
The Tigers will close this weekend's play Sunday at 10 a.m. PT (Noon CT) vs. North Carolina. Because of the prospect of additional inclement weather, stay tuned to mutigers.com. For the most current updates, follow us on Twitter at @mutigersdotcom.
