NORMAN, Okla. – Mizzou baseball dropped game one of its three-game Southeastern Conference series to No. 14 Oklahoma, 9-6, on Friday night at Kimrey Family Stadium. The Tigers slugged three home runs on the night, two by first baseman Jase Woita, but they were not enough as the Sooners claimed the series-opening win.
The Sooners (25-12, 8-8 SEC) struck first when they plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning. After a one-out RBI single to put OU on the board, an infield error by the Tigers (20-18, 3-13 SEC) proved costly as three runs came in to score with two outs in the inning.
Mizzou got on the board in the top of the fourth when Woita slugged a solo shot to deep right-center field (410 ft.) for his team-leading eighth round tripper of the season. However, the Sooners responded with a solo blast of their own in the bottom half of the frame to push the lead back to four runs after four.
The slugfest continued in the top of the fifth when freshman Blaize Ward delivered a two-run shot to right-center field (402 ft.) for his first home run as a Tiger to trim the Sooners' lead to a pair.
In the seventh, the Sooners used a trio of home runs to grow their lead to six. The Tigers threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases, but were unable to capitalize, stranding them loaded to end the threat.
A lead-off double in the ninth by Keegan Knutson started a late rally for the Tigers as he came in to score on a one-out single by shortstop Kam Durnin to make the score 9-4. Durnin swiped second base before Woita came back to the plate and launched his second home run of the night (436 ft.) and ninth of the season to make it a three-run game. However, that score proved to be final as the Sooners hung on for the 9-6, series-opening victory.
NOTEBOOK
- Woita had a big night at the plate with his team-leading eighth and ninth big flies of the season (410 ft., 436 ft.). His first was a solo shot that put Mizzou on the board in the top of the fourth and he followed that with a two-run shot in the ninth. He finished the game 3-for-4 with the pair of home runs, three RBI, two runs scored and added a walk.
- It marked the second multi-homer game of Woita's career (2 vs. Gardner Webb, Feb. 25, 2025, while playing for South Carolina) and his first in the Black & Gold.
- Ward slugged his first home run as a Tiger, a two-run shot to right-center field that traveled 402 feet. He ended the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and scored a run.
- The three home runs for the Tigers marked just their third time this season slugging three-plus home runs in a game. Mizzou was 2-0 when doing so entering the night.
- Durnin went 2-for-5 with an RBI, his eighth stolen base of the season and a run scored.
- Kaden Peer and Knutson each recorded a double. Knutson scored twice.
- Mateo Serna and Jamal George each knocked a single.
- RHP Josh McDevitt made his 10th start of the campaign and went 6.2 innings while throwing a career high 106 pitches. He allowed five earned runs (eight total) on eight hits while striking out seven and walking a pair. The junior has recorded six-plus strikeouts in eight of his 10 starts this season.
- RHP Dane Bjorn relieved McDevitt with two outs in the seventh inning and finished the game on the mound for Mizzou. He threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.
The Tigers are back at Kimrey Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon for game two vs. the No. 14 Sooners at 4 p.m. CT on SEC Network+. All Mizzou baseball games can also be streamed on the Varsity Network by Learfield, with longtime play-by-play announcer Tex Little on the call and Matt Michaels providing color.
