COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou track and field team enjoyed a great day at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge. Leading the way for the Tigers was three-time All-American pole vault specialist Brian Hancock, who broke the school record by vaulting 5.38m (17-7 ¾). He is now at the top of the Big 12 performance list and is currently ranked seventh in the nation. Hancock had come close to breaking the school record in each of the previous two meets, but fell just short. He made sure that didn't happen on Friday. Hancock even took three attempts at 5.50m (18-0 ½), which would have been the nation's second-best mark this season. In all, three other Tigers set meet records on the day as well.
"Overall I was very pleased with the way that we competed at the meet," head coach Brett Halter said. "It was exactly the type of meet that we needed heading into Big 12's. We had a lot of big things happen in the field events today and we were able to give tune-ups to the people on the track that needed them, so I think our team is in a great spot heading into Big 12s."
"Obviously I am very happy for Brian as well," Halter added. "He has been very consistent all season and it was nice to see him finally break through with that mark. I know how hard he has worked to get to that point. But for Brian, that isn't a one-time thing. He has been so consistent and I really feel like he is ready to continue to put up big marks for us."
Many other Mizzou jumpers also enjoyed personal-record setting days. Jeremy Lampley led the way for the Tigers in the triple jump. The Tiger freshman jumped over his previous personal record four times in his six attempts and finished with a jump of 14.43m (47-4 ¼) to finish second. Also in the triple jump, Evan Scott jumped 13.59m (44-7). Tucker Bounds took second in the long jump, jumping 7.03m (23-0 ¾). Tim Williams jumped 6.05m (6-8 ¾) and took second in the high jump while his mark was his third-best of the season. Fellow Tigers Craig Arnzen and Nic Ford both jumped 1.90m (6-2 ¾), placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
The jumping events on the women's side went just as well. Sophomore Heather Green vaulted well over the meet record in the pole vault, jumping 3.81m (12-6), also good enough for an indoor personal record. Taking second in the pole vault behind Green was teammate Holly Stewart, vaulting a personal record of 3.66m (12-0). Abbie Garlich placed fourth in the pole vault after clearing 3.56m (11-0 ¾). Erika Miller jumped 5.35m (17-6 ¾) and took sixth in the long jump.
Missouri also had a good showing in the women's high jump. Freshman Camille Hays led the Tigers, jumping 1.71m (5-7 ¼) and placing second. Stacy Swineburg and Emilee Dailey both jumped 1.66m (5-5 ¼) placing third and fourth, respectively.
