Mizzou Basketball Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement...
"Rebounds were the key to the game for us. I really appreciated the effort we got from Mike Dixon. It shows that our players are quick to the ball. They're a team that thrives from the three-point line, and I thought we did a good job of rotating around to guard their shooters on the perimeter. Both teams took more than 70 shots, so the team that played the best defense outside was going to be in a better position (to win)."
On Ricardo Ratliffe...
"He played very well tonight, and gave an exceptional effort going for rebounds on defense. Ricardo did a good job of disrupting their shots inside, and he also faced up for his shots on offense. Now that he has some Big 12 experience, he comes out for games with more focus."
On the play of the Tigers' second unit...
"Our starters wore down their players early on, so we were able to extend the lead a lot when we brought in our reserves fresh off the bench. They didn't shoot the ball as well as I would've liked, but they made Iowa State work on both ends."
On the Tigers' balanced scoring and back-court rebounding...
"We had five guys in double-figures tonight, so I was glad that we were able to spread the ball around. We tell our guards in practice that it's okay for them to shoot threes, but they need to be able to grab the rebound if the shot doesn't fall."
On Phil Pressey...
"Like Ricardo (Ratliffe), he's starting to really figure things out. He did a good job tonight of driving to the basket and drawing the defenders in to give his teammates open shots. Tonight was a team effort, but it starts with your point guards, and Phil did a good job of running the offense."
Kim English
On Iowa State and Missouri's player depth...
"We tried to take pride in that, but whoever we play, we feel like we have a pretty deep team, and we try to use that to our advantage. We knew that they were a good team and if they came in and stuck around with us that their confidence would only get bigger. We made a concerted effort to come out and get stops early, and hopefully we would get easy turnovers and easy baskets."
On playing against Diante Garrett...
"He is a great player, he just had an off night. Our defense had a lot to do with that, but next time we play them he could go off and have a really big night. We just need to take this in stride and be blessed that he didn't have his best night because he is an amazing player."
On the high rebounding totals for MU...
"We were active on getting to the ball and that obviously tells us that they weren't hitting the shots that they usually do. I think they are one of the best three point shooting teams in the country, but our scrambling defense bothered them so they missed 18 threes, and that is a lot of rebounds to get."
MICHAEL DIXON
On Iowa State player fatigue...
"We had some shots where we didn't convert, but you could tell with their facial expressions that they were a little worn down, and we knew that if we just kept going at them that we were going to wear them down. I saw guys tugging on their shorts and I knew we were wearing them down"
On the turnover effect on the game...
"It's kind of like a domino effect, once the player turns the ball over the team kind of gets rattled, and they all start to be a little more conscious with the ball. When we are trapping and they get three pointers they kind of look behind their shoulders because they don't know where we are coming from, and things like that can lead to turnovers."
Iowa State Head Coach- Fred Hoiberg
Opening Statement...
"We just didn't play a smart basketball game tonight. We knew coming in what we had to do, as far as taking care of the ball, as far as getting back in transition, as far as keeping them off boards and preventing second shots. Look at all the numbers. We turned it over 19 times, they got 16 offensive rebounds, they got 25 points off of rebounds. Everything that we had to do to stay in this game and give ourselves a chance at the end, we didn't do."
On what led to loss...
"We didn't play smart basketball, that's what it came down to. Every time we came over we talked about slowing down, if you have an uncontested lane to the rim, take it. We had Scott [Christopherson] open on the wing numerous times and we continued to go in there and get swatted."
On Missouri's style of play...
" It speeds you up, they're great shot blockers, they come from behind, they tip the ball from behind. If you turn the ball over against them, it turns into a basket. You saw that they had 18 turnovers, we had 19, but they out-scored us 25 to 14."
