COLUMBIA, Mo. - Another day, another major national award that University of Missouri junior QB Blaine Gabbert is now up for. One day after being named to the Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, Gabbert has also been named a candidate for the Manning Award, which goes annually to the nation's top collegiate quarterback.
Gabbert, who led Mizzou to eight wins as a first-year starter in 2009, was unveiled Thursday morning by the Allstate Sugar Bowl (creators of the award) as a candidate for the award, which began in 2004. Gabbert had an outstanding season a year ago, as he threw for 3,593 yards and 24 touchdowns while helping guide one of the youngest teams in the country to eight wins and a Texas Bowl berth.
"The Manning family is like the first family of quarterbacks, to be considered for the award is a real honor," Gabbert said. "But I know it's only pre-season, and that we've got a lot of work ahead of us as a team to reach our goals, so that's what my focus is on," he said.
Prior to the 2004 college football season, the Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only college football quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances; therefore, it is presented annually following the completion of the bowl season. The winner is selected by a panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings.
