DES MOINES, Iowa - Tiger senior Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) placed sixth overall in the decathlon at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships on Saturday (June 26) at Drake Stadium. Adcock scored 7,579 points in the two-day competition to finish at the third-best collegiate athlete in the event.
The sixth-place nod by Adcock is the Tigers' best in the event since 1920 when Brutus Hamilton won the event. The sixth-place nod is also the best for Adcock at the USATF Championships, topping his previous best placement of seventh, which he set back in 2009.
Adcock, who totaled 3,932 points after day one of the competition, opened day two with a blazing time of 14.20 in the 110m hurdles, adding 949 points to his overall total. The 949 points in the event were the most that he scored in any of the 10 events in the two-day competition. His time in the event was also the second best among the entire field, trailing only professional decathlete Jake Arnold.
Following the hurdles, Adcock moved to the discus where he threw 37.76m (123-11) to add 619 points to his overall score. Adcock then turned in a top pole vault clearance of 4.60m (15-1) for 790 points, just off of his outdoor season-best of 4.70m (15-5). He then threw 52.56m (172-5) in the javelin, his third-best throw of the season, earning him 627 points.. He then ended the competition by clocking a time of 4:42.86 in the 1,500m run to add 662 points to his score.
Former Tiger Elisha Hunt also competed on Saturday in the hammer throw and fouled all three of her attempts. Former Tiger Christian Cantwell will compete tomorrow in the men's shot put as Mizzou will conclude action at the USATF Championships.
