Mizzou Tripped Up By Kansas

May 7, 2010

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kan. - - Mizzou lost a series opener for the first time in four weeks, falling to Kansas by a score of 10-3 on Friday night in Lawrence, Kan. The loss drops the Tigers to 14-20 on the year and 7-11 in the Big 12. Kansas moves to 27-17-1 overall and 8-10-1 in the conference.

Junior Brett Nicholas drove in his 53rd run of the season with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to put the first run of the game on the board. Nicholas, however, was held hitless on the night, finishing 0-for-3 to snap his 19-game hitting streak.

Kansas answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning and scored two more in the second on a two-run home run by Brett Lisher to make it a 4-1 KU lead.

Each team scored in the third with Mizzou's run scoring on an RBI single from senior Michael Liberto, which scored junior Jonah Schmidt, who had doubled to start the inning. Liberto has had a hit in each of the last six games.

Freshman Eric Garcia hit his fifth home run of the year to lead off the fifth inning, but Kansas got that run back in the bottom of the bottom of the sixth. The Jayhawks added two runs in the eighth inning.

Missouri loaded the bases to open the top of the seventh on an error, a base hit and a walk, but left the bases loaded without plating any runs.

Garcia and Schmidt each had two-hit games for Mizzou. KU's Brandon Marcias and Tony Thompson each had four hits in the game and Brian Heere recorded three hits.

Game two of the series will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with the final game of the weekend set for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Junior Brad Buehler is the scheduled starter for Missouri on Saturday, while the Jayhawks are slated to send Cameron Selik to the mound.
