Meet Quotes
Men's Shot Put Winner Mason Finley, Kansas
On the weather conditions...
It was raining throughout. We have practiced in those conditions, so we were prepared for the rain. I didn't think it was too bad.
On his sequence of throws...
I warmed up well. I didn't take as many warm up throws as I normally would because I felt like I had my technique down. Then when I got up there to take my first throw, I could not find my shot. I had to use someone else's shot for my first throw. I just put it out there and it went about 60 feet. On my second throw I had my own shot back and I was pretty confident. I did a different spin off the back and it was a good throw. My third throw was pretty much the same, but with some more power. Then in the finals it started raining pretty hard. My fourth throw I put socks over the tip of my shoes to help with the traction and it helped a little. I got my best throw on that throw. On my fifth throw I slipped and fell in the ring. I was looking down and it had gotten really slick in the ring. I knew I had already won the meet, but I decided to go ahead and take my last throw because I didn't want to end the competition on a fall.
On his mindset...
The first throw has to be really smooth because it sets the tone for the meet for me. I need to make sure all of my movements are correct and give a little pop at the end. If I get a good throw with my first throw then I feel comfortable to go out and try to win it on my next throws. If not, then I have to focus on my technique until it gets right. Today I wanted to win. For me I always want to win the meet, but for me I also want to set a personal best.
Men's Decathlon Winner Nick Adcock, Missouri
On what winning the decathlon title means...
It means a lot. I'm from Missouri in Kansas City and I had a lot of family here. I thought I had a pretty good shot last year and had some things go wrong. This year everything worked out. It's a great feeling. I don't know if I've ever smiled after a multi finish but this year I am for sure.
On concerns going into pole vault after trouble last year...
Last year we had the same weather conditions in Lubbock - a great first day and the second day there was rain and it was cold. Pole vault has been going great for me all year. I wasn't really thinking about it. Warm ups went great. I ended up jumping really well. I was looking for a few more bars but I was happy with what I did.
On if last year's result made the win even sweeter...
It made it even sweeter knowing what happened last year. Same conditions, same everything, and coming here this year and getting things done.
On staying with teammate Lars Rise during the 1500m...
I knew (Rise) had to beat me by about a second and a half. He was going to try to run pretty quick today but with the weather conditions he couldn't. We got out good on the first lap but the second lap was slow. I was just going to stay right with him or in front of him. When he passed me I had some kid on my front left and got blocked so I had to follow around. Then I just sat right on him. On the last 100m I pulled ahead and he made a surge and I still had a lot left. I didn't go all out on the 1500m but I did what I had to do.
Women's Discus Champion Brittany Borman
On winning the event title...
It was a really good day and I am very happy. My best is 186-0 so I was a little off that mark. It just has been a really good experience to win this because there are so many good throwers in the conference.
On the weather conditions...
I though that the weather played a role because it was a little wet. It started to dry up which made things a little better for us towards the end of the competition. But the wind still saw pretty strong.
On the throws tradition at Oklahoma...
I hope we can score a lot of points in the throws events. Everyone has come out and they have competed really well so far. It has been a pretty good meet for us so far.
Women's Long Jump Champion Chantel Malone, Texas
On winning the Big 12 title...
I'm very excited. It's a great accomplishment and I just want to continue my hard work and hope that it continues to pay off the rest of this year into my senior year. The goal was to get it in my first three jumps before I ran the 400m, so I was really excited to get it on my third attempt.
Women's High Jump Champion Victoria Lucas, Texas
On winning the Big 12 title...
It's such a great feeling to get my first Big 12 title. The conditions weren't great but I definitely had the support of all my teammates in the stands, my coaches and Alicia [Peterson] and Beverly [Owoyele] who were high jumping with me. We're all really excited to get 22 points out of the high jump for our team. It was all of our goals to score and I'm glad I was able to get the win for Texas.
