LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Mizzou track and field program wrapped up day two at the Kansas Relays on Friday (April 16) and got several notable performances, highlighted by a second-place finish in the shot put by both freshman Katie Evans (Powersville, Mo.) on the women's side and senior Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.) on the men's side. Evans turned in a throw of 14.74m (48-4 ½) to earn the runner-up nod in a field of 30 throwers. Oaker took second overall with a throw of 17.54m (57-6 ½), finishing behind only Big 12 Indoor Champion Mason Finley of Kansas. In all, Mizzou saw eight student-athletes advance to tomorrow's finals in their respective events.
The sprinters saw plenty of success on day two of the Kansas Relays as several speedsters qualified for tomorrow's finals. Leslie Farmer (Jefferson City, Mo.), who broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles last week at Oregon, posted the third-best qualifying time in the event on Friday, earning her a spot in tomorrow's finals as she was paced at 1:01.91. Junior Chris Davis (Riverdale, Ga.) followed suit in the men's 400m hurdles as he earned the third-best qualifying time as well at 53.06. The 400m hurdle finals will start at 3:15 p.m. tomorrow.
Both Lana Mims (Tulsa, Okla.) and Ryan Blackwell (Fenton, Mo.) advanced to tomorrow's 400m dash finals on the women's and men's side, respectively. Mims won her heat after clocking in at 55.76 to automatically qualify for the finals while Blackwell finished second in his heat at 48.35, but failed to automatically qualify. But, his time was the third-best among runners that did not win their heat, so he was the eighth and final qualifier in that event. The 400m dash finals will begin at 2:55 p.m. tomorrow.
The Tiger sprinters continued to see success in the relay events as the men's 4x400m team advanced to tomorrow's final after clocking in at 3:19.15 to win its heat. The foursome was comprised of Clifton Leake (Dallas, Texas), Matt Pickerel (Columbia, Mo.), Kellyn Fogarty (Marshalltown, Iowa) and Davis. The women did not compete a 4x400m relay team on Friday. The men's 4x100m relay team just missed qualifying for tomorrow's final, finishing just one spot out of the top eight in the competition.
Sierra Gant (Wichita, Kan.) also competed in the 200m dash for the Tigers and took 10th after running to a time of 25.13, rounding out the day for the Tigers on the short track.
Aside from Evans, Mizzou's women saw plenty of success in the shot put on the day as Laura Greenfield (Liberty, Mo.) placed fifth in the event with a throw of 14.30m (46-11). Cortni Ervin (Marshall, Mo.) also won her flight of the shot put after measuring in at 13.12m (43-0 ½). The men followed suit as well. Freshman and All-Big 12 honoree Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) earned fifth after tossing 16.11m (52-10 ½) in his first attempt to build upon what Oaker was able to do in the shot put.
Sophomore Asa Wyatt (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) competed in the men's javelin on Friday and threw a massive personal-best at 61.72m (202-6) to earn sixth place overall in the event, rounding out the Tiger throwers on the day. Mizzou's throwers will compete in the discus throw tomorrow to round out their competition.
In the jumps, Shawnte Middlebrook (Lee's Summit, Mo.) was Mizzou's top finisher in the women's triple jump after measuring in at 11.90m (39-0 ½). In the high jump, Stacy Swineburg (Camdenton, Mo.) was Mizzou's top jumper after clearing 1.60m (5-3), earning her seventh place overall. Teammate Meaghan Brougher (Dallas, Texas) finished 11th after leaping 1.55m (5-1). Daniel Hunter (Hallsville, Mo.) will compete in the high jump for the Mizzou men tomorrow.
The Kansas Relays will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. while the Tigers will not start competing until the women's sprint medley relay at 8:40 a.m. The majority of the Tigers' middle distance runners will compete tomorrow as well, highlighted by the 800m run on both the men's and women's side and the 4x880-yard relays.
