Missouri Falls to No. 61 Oklahoma State

The University of Missouri women's tennis team (5-10, 0-4 Big 12) fell to No. 61 Oklahoma State (8-4, 2-2 Big 12), 6-1, at the DeBois Tennis Complex in Stillwater Sunday afternoon. The Cowgirls won all but one singles match, after sweeping the doubles competition to open the day.
“Today was our first outdoor match of the season, it was a little windy, and we all dealt with those conditions. I am happy with the way that we competed today, Oklahoma State is a very good team,” said Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey.
The Tigers dropped the doubles point, falling at each position. At No. 2, Sofia Ayala and Jamie Mera battled to an 8-7 (2) loss, falling to Sarah Meghoufel and Malika Rose in a closely contested match.
Oklahoma State got out to an early lead in singles competition, capturing wins in the No. 3 and 4 spots. Sarah Meghoufel captured a No. 4 victory, defeating Tiger freshman Maria Christensen, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3, junior Mallory Weber was defeated by Sasha Belova, 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Andrea Lewis put the Tigers on the board, finishing her match at No.6 with a victory over Alexandra Cristello, 7-5, 6-4. The win marks Lewis' first conference career win.
Oklahoma State then clinched the match, with Nataliya Shatkovskaya taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tampa, Fla. native Jamie Mera.
Closing out singles play, the Tigers dropped two matches in three sets. Junior Kaitlyn Ritchie rallied at No. 1, coming from behind to take a second set, before dropping a third and the match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Senior Sofia Ayala also fought her way to a second set win, falling in a super tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The Tigers continue a three-match conference road stint next weekend as they visit No. 65 University of Colorado in their fifth conference match of the season.
