The University of Missouri women's tennis team fell to Louisville, 4-3 at Columbia's Green Tennis Center Friday evening. The Tigers fall to 3-4 on the season. Freshman Maria Christensen improved to (5-1) on the season in singles, earning one of Mizzou's three singles victories.
The match began in Louisville's favor, as they swept the doubles matches to take the first point of the night. The MU duo of Mallory Weber and Kaitlyn Ritchie fell to 2-5 on the year at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 loss to Louisville's Mandy Brown and Sarah Miller. Sophomore Jamie Mera and senior Sofia Ayala lost to Amelia Harris and Stefanie Villajuan, 8-1, and Andrea Lewis and Kristen Bleakley fell to Louise Noe and Kaysara Mandry, 8-4.
In singles, junior Mallory Weber took a quick first set at No. 3 singles, 6-1. Going down 4-1 to open the second set, she fought her way back to a 7-5 win, tying the team score at one.
Louisville then went on a three-match win streak at No.1, 4, and 2 singles to clinch the win, before dropping the final two matches of the evening. At No. 1, Redbird Sarah Miller downed Jamie Mera, 6-3, 6-3. Louisville's Mandy Brown defeated junior Kaitlyn Ritchie in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. At. No 4 singles, freshman Andrea Lewis fell to Kaysara Mandry, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Sofia Ayala defeated Louisville's Stefanie Villajuan 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
To end the night, freshman Maria Christensen picked up her fifth win of the season defeating Louisville's Gabi Duncan, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 5.
“This was a very good college match. Louisville has a very good team,” said Head Coach Blake Starkey. “Even though we didn't win the match, we showed a lot of improvement and we definitely had our chances. We competed hard, and I'm pleased with that. Now we have to get ready for a top 25 ranked SMU team.”
The Tigers will take on the Mustangs of No. 21 Southern Methodist University Sunday morning at 10 a.m. before traveling away from Columbia for their next three matches.
