AMES, Iowa - Highlighted by great performances in the 600-yard run from Chris Davis (Riverdale, Ga.) and Ryan Blackwell (Fenton, Mo.), the Mizzou track and field program completed action at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday (Feb. 13) inside the Lied Recreation Center. Davis won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:11.05 while Blackwell clocked in at 1:11.25 to take second overall in the event. Davis now ranks 10th in the Big 12 this season with his clocking on Saturday. Tiger freshman and All-Big 12 cross country honoree Kaitie Vanatta (Littleton, Colo.) also set a provisional qualifying time in the women's 5,000m run after clocking in at 16:40.70. Vanatta's time is a season-best by any Tiger during the indoor season.
Sophomore Blake Irwin (Bettendorf, Iowa) also added his name to the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers as he clocked a team-best time of 1:49.31 in the 800m run, a personal-best. Irwin had been just 0.06 seconds shy of qualifying already this season but made sure to add his name to the list in the fastest of four heats in the event. He placed sixth overall in the 800m run which featured seven NCAA provisional qualifiers. Aaron Dixon (Lee's Summit, Mo.) had a fine showing as well in the 800m, running a time of 1:51.59. Laura Roxberg (Overland Park, Kan.) was the women's top finisher in the event at 2:10.47, earning seventh overall.
Senior Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) and Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.) also turned in nice performances for the Tigers. Oaker placed third with a shot put of 17.72m (58-2) on his final attempt of the day while Adcock placed fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.04. Sprinter Lana Mims (Tulsa, Okla.), despite cramping during the final 100m of the 400m dash, still finished eighth overall in the seeded race. She clocked in at 55.68 and may have improved her NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 54.62 if she had not gotten hurt. High jumper Meaghan Brougher (Dallas, Texas), had a fine performance in that event as she placed fourth overall after clearing 1.68m (5-6). The leap is just off of a season-best for the Tiger senior.
The women's 4x400m relay team, despite running without Mims for the first time this season, still clocked in at 3:45.76 to place sixth overall in a very competitive field. The men's team clocked in at 3:12.77 to take fourth-place in its heat.
Former Tiger and current volunteer assistant coach Krishna Lee (Kansas City, Mo.), placed fourth in the women's shot put after throwing 15.73m (51-7 ¼). Aside from Lee, Laura Greenfield (Liberty, Mo.), was Mizzou's top collegiate finisher in the event after turning in a throw of 13.73m (45-0 ½). Also, Katie Vanarsdall (Buckner, Mo.) and Cortni Ervin (Marshall, Mo.) both finished in the top half of the 70-athlete field.
Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) and Tim Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) - both of whom were competing unattached at the meet - had fine performances in the mile run. Ries clocked in at 4:49.81 to earn ninth overall while Cornell clocked in at 4:06.25 to place third in the event. Senior Michael Barrows (Flint, Mich.) was the Tigers' top finisher in the men's mile at seventh after clocking in at 4:08.65.
In the non-seeded events, freshman Bailey Belvis (Prosper, Texas) placed second in the mile with a personal-best clocking of 4:58.73 as she was the first Tiger to compete on the day. Sophomore Tyrell Everett (Wichita, Kan.) also clocked a second-place finish in the men's 800m run as the clocked a time of 1:51.85. He trailed only Nick Hutton in the event, who was competing unattached, making him the top collegian in the event. Allyson Brown (Cordova, Tenn.) also had a fine performance for the Tigers in the non-seeded events as she placed fourth on the 400m dash with a time of 57.34, a personal-best clocking. Freshman Matt Pickerel (Columbia, Mo.) was the Tiger men's top finisher in the non-seeded 400m dash with a time of 49.61, also a personal-record.
Daniel Hunter (Hallsville, Mo.) was the Tigers' top finisher in the non-seeded high jump after clearing a Mizzou season-best 2.01m (6-7), earning him seventh place overall. That mark would have earned him 11th in the seeded competition. The meet was the first of the season for the All-Big 12 honoree from a year ago.
Mizzou will be back in action next weekend as it will return home to the Hearnes Center Field House to host the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Friday) and the Missouri All-Comers Meet (Saturday). For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
