Mizzou Basketball Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Anderson
vs. Harris-Stowe State University
On defense in the first game:
“Well, I thought our guys were contesting all shots. I thought that even though they broke our pressure, at times. When they got into the lane I though you saw guys were rotating over and we were actually blocking some shots.”
On Marcus Denmon being held out of the game:
“It was a precaution, so we'll get back in the morning and, hopefully, he'll be ready to practice; but I thought that it served (him) well. You never want to see a guy get hurt, but it's part of (the game). And with that being said, now you give other guys an opportunity to go in and play more minutes.”
On having different starting line-ups each half:
“I wanted to see how our guys would respond coming out, maybe off the bench, maybe starting out. It's early in the year so they're trying to figure out what their roles are and I'm trying to figure out how they react in certain situations.”
On the young players on the team:
“Early on you could see the nerves going. I think the great thing is, a lot of new guys got a chance to get their first taste of college basketball. So hopefully that's going to benefit us going into the next game and they can get a little bit more comfortable.”
Mizzou Player Quotes
Junior Guard - Baltimore, Md.
On his performance tonight:
“We definitely treat every game like it's the national championship. That's how hard we prepare in practice, and this is just another day for us to get better. Like Phil and Ricky said, it felt good to play someone else. Coach Mike called three fouls today in practice so to see Laurence shoot fourteen free throws was impressive.”
On the defense:
“I feel really good about the veterans. When the place is going crazy, Ricky's diving on the floor and John Underwood is doing nothing but blocking shots it's one hundred percent total body, but I would like for our defense to get a lot better. I'm not really pleased that we gave up 60 points, but we're still a work in progress and we're getting a little better each and every day. Tonight we started out really tough at the rim and we got a little weak later but that also stems from the guys getting penetrated. Our guards need to be better on top and I think our big men could be a little bit better about protecting the rim without fouling.”
Freshman Guard - Columbia, Mo.
On the aggressiveness of the game:
“It translates from what we do in practice, we really get after each other. It's almost second nature by the time we get to the game because we are all running passing lanes and cutting people off trying to get our hands on the passes. The steals don't really occur on the ball they occur away from the ball after the deflection occurs. It's a mindset you have to have; you have to tell yourself to keep working to get those deflections.”
On advice from his father, MU Volleyball Coach Wayne Kreklow:
“All the time after games we go home and talk about what happened. We discuss what was done well and what needed to be worked on. He makes references back to when he was playing to show examples for me and show me what I need to strive to do in order to better myself as a player. Eventually I learned to listen, when I figured out he knew what he was talking about.”
Junior Forward - Memphis, Tenn.
On his complementing Ricardo Ratliffe in the low post:
“A lot of the free throws I shot today were made possible due to the double team on Ricardo on the post so I was getting free a lot. Playing with a guy that demands so much attention is not only going to free myself up, but it's going to free up the other three guys on the court. I think he did a great job today. It was his first college game. Kudos to him, he played hard. Justin had twelve rebounds and it made it a little bit easier for me tonight.”
