No. 11 Mizzou Wins Two at Quad Meet

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 11 Missouri wrestling team opened the home portion of their 2010-11 dual schedule with a quad meet that featured Lindenwood, Hofstra and No. 17 Oregon State. The Tigers finished the day with a 2-1 record, knocking off their first two opponents before dropping their last dual.

Missouri's day got started with their in-state foe, Lindenwood, who ranks as high as No. 8 in the NAIA rankings. The Tigers took care of business, winning 41-0 for the program's first shutout since Mizzou shutout Maryland by a 47-0 score in 2004-05.
Freshman Alan Waters and sophomore Nathan McCormick got things off on the right foot, with each grappler pinning their opponent to put Mizzou up 12-0 right off the bat. Waters put his foe on his back in 1:43, while McCormick pinned his in 3:50.
At 141, senior Todd Schavrien scored more bonus points for the Tigers, getting a victory by technical fall in a 17-2 win. Schavrien recorded a takedown and a nearfall in the first, two takedowns and an escape in the second and another pair of takedowns to go with a nearfall in the third.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Bradley defeated his opponent by an 8-2 decision at 149 pounds, while junior Danny Gonsor defeated Donald Woods, 10-4, to put the Tigers up 23-0 at the midway point.
Redshirt freshman Zach Toal scored a major decision, and Patrick Wright picked up a 2-1 win over Chris Chionuma at 174 pounds. Chionuma is ranked No. 2 in the nation at the NAIA level. Sophomore Mike Larson won his match 15-4, and Jake Glore picked up his first win of the year with a 12-1 major decision of his own. Closing out the day was senior Dom Bradley, who defeated his opponent 6-1.
The Tigers then took on the Hofstra Pride, who is receiving votes in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Tigers got several big wins late in the match to pull out the 19-15 victory.
Waters again got the Tigers off on the right foot, edging out Steve Bonanno, the 21st ranked grappler in the country, by a 3-2 decision.
After a fall by Hofstra at 133, Schavrien put the Tigers back on top with an 8-0 major decision. At 157, Gonsor picked up a 3-0 win over Zach Clemente to put Mizzou up 10-9.
Hofstra would win the next two matches by decision to go up 15-10, but the Tigers got three big wins in the last three matches to secure the victory.
Wright, who wrestled at 174 against Lindenwood, bumped up to 184 and defeated No. 17 Ben Clymer by a 5-3 decision. Wright picked up a takedown in the first and scored a reversal in the second to go along with 3:39 of riding time.
Larson, who also bumped up a class for this match, defeated his opponent by an 8-1 score, putting the Tigers up 16-15 going into the heavyweight bout. Bradley scored three takedowns and an escape to go with his riding time while only giving up two escapes as he defeated his opponent 8-2, giving Missouri the 19-15 dual win.
The last dual of the day pitted the Tigers up against No. 17 Oregon State. The Beavers jumped out big early, winning four of the first six matches and picked up some big wins late to hold off the surging Tigers, as OSU won 19-13.
Waters continued his perfect start with a 3-2 decision against No. 10 Jason Lara. The true freshman is now 4-0 in duals and 14-0 on the season
Kyle Bradley got the win at 149 to pull the Tigers within a point of the Beavers, as he knocked off Scott Sakaguchi by a 5-3 victory in sudden death overtime. Bradley got up 3-1 after two periods with a takedown and an escape, but Sakaguchi fought back by getting a third period escape and a point for riding time. However, Bradley was able to take Sakaguchi down late into sudden victory to get the win.
Henderson took care of his opponent at 174, beating Cody Weishoff by a 19-5 major decision. Henderson notched four takedowns, a reversal and three takedowns in his dominating win.
The win by Henderson moved the Tigers within three, cutting the Oregon State lead down to 13-10. However, the Beavers were able to win the next two matches to clinch the win. In the final match of the night, Dom Bradley defeated No. 10 Clayton Jack by a 2-1 final. Bradley now sits at 8-0 on the season and is 4-0 in duals.
Missouri returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 27, with the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals. The Tigers will wrestle in four matches on the day, taking on American, No. 24 Rutgers, No. 13 Lehigh and Maryland. For more information stay tuned to mutigers.com.
