Come From Behind Effort Results in Tiger Win

Cedar Falls, Iowa- The Missouri wrestling team used a come-from-behind effort to best Northwestern, 23-17, and advance in the consolation bracket of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals in the UNI-Dome of Northern Iowa. Missouri (2-3), ranked 17th, will take on the winner of the Cornell vs. Ohio State dual at 5 p.m. (CT). Fans unable to attend the event can watch the free online broadcast at www.livesportsvideo.com.
Down 9-0 entering the 141-pound bout, junior Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) snapped a two match losing streak by shutting out Robert Joyce, 6-0. Schavrien managed two takedowns and an escape and tallied 1:28 of riding time for his sixth and final point.
The Tigers suffered a tough loss at 149 pounds as sophomore Brandon Wiest (O'Fallon, Mo) was pinned at the buzzer signaling the end of the second period. Next to the mat was sophomore 157-pounder, Patrick Wright (Grand Ledge, Mich.). Wright came through with a 9-4 win, leading his Wildcat opponent throughout the entire seven minute match.
Senior Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) collected career win No. 104 by winning his 165 pound match, 9-4. Leading the bout 5-1 at the close of the second period, opponent Robert Kellogg closed in on Marable, scoring three points in the final two minutes of action. Marable was awarded a reversal at the buzzer, one point for his 1:58 of riding time and one point for Kellogg's unsportsmanlike conduct.
Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) brought Missouri within two points of Northwestern with his 15-4 win by major decision at 174 pounds. Henderson shut down Paul Jackson scoring 12 points by takedown.
All-American Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) collected Missouri's second straight win by major decision after topping Aaron Jones, 10-1. Jones was held scoreless through the first five minutes and allowed only an optional escape in the third.
The final Tiger win of the night came at heavyweight as senior defending national champion Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) was awarded the win by forfeit. Northwestern, who had accumulated 18 team points, was deducted one, following the 197 pound match featuring 11th ranked Tiger Brent Haynes and Wildcat grappler John Schoen.
