The Drake Relays will also serve as a homecoming for a trio of Iowa natives on the Mizzou roster, most notably Blake Irwin (Bettendorf, Iowa), who is a five-time high school Drake Relays Champion. He was also nominated for the meet's most outstanding high school performer in 2007 and finished runner-up for that honor again in 2008. Irwin currently holds the Tigers' second-best time in the 800m run during the outdoor season as he was paced at 1:50.52 at last week's Kansas Relays as he won the event.
Also seeing plenty of success at the Drake Relays during his high school days is Tiger hurdler Kellyn Fogarty (Marshalltown, Iowa). Widely considered the top hurdle prospect in the state of Iowa during his high school days, Fogarty claimed the Drake Relays Championship in the 400m hurdles in 2007 and finished third in his senior season in 2008. He was just about half a second shy of becoming only the fourth high school athlete to win the event more than once. Since coming to Mizzou, Fogarty has posted a personal-best time of 53.15 in the event, doing so two weeks ago at the Oregon Pepsi Invitational.
Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) also ran at the Drake Relays while running with North Linn High School. Unlike Irwin and Fogarty, who are both sophomores, the Tiger senior has seen plenty of action at Drake as a collegiate athlete as well. In 2006, she helped the women's 4x800m relay team to a third-place finish in the event. Also, during her senior year of high school, Ries took third in the girl's 800m run at 2:15.10.
Mizzou is coming off of a great meet at the Kansas Relays last weekend where its relay teams on both the men's and women's side combined to score more points than any other college team at the meet, helping them claim a pair of Kansas Relays trophies. The Tigers swept both the men's and women's 4x880-yard relays while the Tiger men also finished with top honors in the sprint medley relay and finished as the runner-up in the 4x400m relay. The women also finished second in the sprint medley relay to round out the successful day for the Tiger relays, which bodes well as they head to the Drake Relays this weekend.
Former Tigers Krishna Lee and Chris Rohr are the most recent Tiger to win a Drake Relays Championship as they each claimed the hammer throw title last season. One year prior in 2008, distance runner Kinsey Farren (Dallas, Texas) claimed the 10,000m run title, giving Mizzou an event champion in each of the past two seasons. Also, Mizzou has 28 total relay titles at the Drake Relays, with the most recent being the men's 4x800m relay team in 2006. In fact, since 1911, Mizzou athletes have claimed 79 Drake Relays titles.
