COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou track and field program will take the short drive west on I-70 as it travels to Lawrence, Kan., for the 2010 Kansas Relays, which will be held this weekend at Memorial Stadium on the KU campus. For the Tigers, the meet will begin Thursday with the women's hammer throw at 12 p.m. The meet will continue on Friday and Saturday as well, beginning at 8 a.m. both days. Mizzou will begin action Friday at 11:30 a.m. with the women's shot put and will begin Saturday's competition at 10:30 a.m. with the women's pole vault.
Mizzou is looking to build on a strong showing as it competed with some of the nation's elite teams at the Pepsi Invitational last weekend in Eugene, Ore. The women's team highlighted the meet for the Tigers as it knocked off No. 12 Washington at the meet and hung with No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 3 Oregon throughout the 19-event scored team competition. Freshman Katie Evans (Powersville, Mo.) was the only event winner for the Tiger women as she claimed the shot put title, but several other Tigers had notable performances at the meet. Sophomore Leslie Farmer (Jefferson City, Mo.) broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 1:00.09, while Layne Moore (Emporia, Kan.) used a late kick to take second overall in the 800m run at 2:08.22, an outdoor personal-best time.
Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.) and Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) were the two event winners for the Tiger men as they took home the shot put and discus titles, respectively. Junior Aaron Dixon (Lee's Summit, Mo.) also had a fine meet, placing second in the men's 800m run after making a charge in the last 100 meters as he clocked in at 1:50.11.
After a short, compact meet that featured as many as nine events going on at the same time in Oregon, the Kansas Relays will be a much larger meet, featuring both college and high school programs from around the region. In all, the meet is a four-day affair, beginning with a combined events competition on Wednesday. The Tiger combined event athletes will not compete in the Kansas Relays decathlon as they are out in Azusa, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Combined Events, which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.
A trio of Tigers - Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.), Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) and Lauren Begany (Fenton, Mo.) - stayed on the west coast after the Pepsi Invitational and will begin competition at Mt. SAC tomorrow. Begany is the only one of the three to compete in a combined events competition during the outdoor season thus far as she won the Audrey J. Walton Combined Events Carnival heptathlon. Adcock and Rise were both indoor All-Americans in the heptathlon while Adcock was the Big 12 Champion in the event and posted a Big 12 meet record in the event en-route to claiming his second Big 12 title. This will be the first decathlon scored for both competitors this season.
