Adcock Named Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year

March 9, 2010

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tiger senior combined-event standout Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) has been honored as the US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Regional Field Athlete of the Year, as announced Tuesday (March 9). Adcock is the second-straight Tiger to take home this award as former Tiger All-American Chris Rohr was the recipient of the award in 2009. The award recognizes the top male and female track and field athletes from the nine different regions across the nation, along with assistant and head coaches.

Adcock put together one of the finest indoor seasons of any combined event athlete at Mizzou. He reset the school record in the heptathlon with his score of 5,938 points at the Big 12 Championships en-route to earning the Big 12 title in the events. His total score also reset the Big 12 Championship meet standard in the heptathlon and ranks him second in the nation this season. He is the No. 2 overall seed headed into the NCAA Championships this weekend.

Adcock also claimed the Bill Bergan Combined Events title as he posted a score of 5,758 points to win his first heptathlon title of the season. Both times he has competed in the heptathlon this season, Adcock has posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and both times he ranked second in the nation after the meet.

Aside from his national rank, Adcock's mark ranks him 12th in the world this season and first on an oversized track. Ashton Eaton of Oregon is the only American to have posted a higher score in the heptathlon this season.

Much of Adcock's success this season can be derived from his skills as a hurdler. Coming into the season, he owned the school record at 8.09 seconds, but he has since lowered that mark to 7.92, resetting the mark four times - including twice at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge - this season. He also set personal-best marks in the pole vault and long jump during the indoor season.

Adcock will join teammates Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) and Shannon Leinert (Eureka, Mo.) at the NCAA Championships later this weekend. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
