Two Tigers Advance to Finals at Big 12 Championships

Norman, Okla. - Missouri stands tied for fourth place at the Big 12 Championships. with 16 points. The day opened with the pigtail round, seeing the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds face each other. Missouri had six matches in the round, seeing four victories. Advancing seven wrestlers to semifinal matches, the Tigers won two. Seniors Nick Marable and Max Askren will compete for their third individual Big 12 Championship titles at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively.

Nathan McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) earned a decision over Nebraska's C.J. Napier, 3-1 before falling to Oklahoma State's Jordan Oliver by major decision in the semifinals, 10-2.

Redshirt freshman Nick Hucke (Pewaukee, Wis.) won by fall over Nebraska's Dustin Payne, competing in his first match since Jan. 16. He was then defeated by Kyle Terry of Oklahoma 13-4 in the semifinals. Hucke will now face the winner of and Oklahoma State, Nebraska consolation match for third place honors.

Rounding out Missouri's pigtail round wins, redshirt freshman Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) earned his second win over Oklahoma State's Alan Gelogaev in a 6-5 decision. In the semifinals, Haynes suffered a loss to Iowa State's No. 1 ranked Jake Varner, 14-3.

At 141 pounds, junior Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) suffered a 6-7 loss to Oklahoma State's Jamal Parks. In a close match, Schavrien was just one second away from earning a point for riding time which would have tied the match at seven, forcing sudden victory.

Senior Nick Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) defeated Oklahoma State's Alex Meade 2-1, earning one point from and escape, and another for 1:27 of riding time.

Senior Max Askren (Hartland, Wis.) defeated Nebraska's Josh Ihnen, 2-1. Advancing to his third Big 12 Championship title match, Askren looks to become Missouri's first wrestler to earn a Big 12 Title in more than one weight class.

The Tigers currently stand tied for fourth with Nebraska in the team race with 14 points. Iowa State is in first with 51 points, Oklahoma State in second with 49 points, and Oklahoma is in third with 33 points.
