Tigers Take Two to Open Fall Season

Sept. 26, 2009

Columbia, Mo. - A rain-shortened game saw the Tiger softball team down Heartland Community College, 3-0, in game two of Missouri's Saturday doubleheader played on University Field. Right-handed sophomore Chelsea Thomas (Pleasantville, Iowa) collected the win after hurling the first five innings and striking out 10 of the 18 batters she faced. Senior lefty Jana Hainey (Peculiar, Mo.) entered the game in the sixth and threw one and one-third inning before rain brought the game to a close. Hainey struck out two batters and was credited with the save.

Junior catcher Megan Christopher (Wright City, Mo.) scored the first of Missouri's three runs. Batting seventh, Christopher hit a second inning, one out double to reach base and was driven in on senior Michaele Vock's (Morrison, Ill.) single to center.

Three frames later, freshman Nicole Hudson (Webb City, Mo.) led off the fifth with a solo home run deep over the wall in right center. The yard ball was her third of the day. Hudson crushed a fifth inning leadoff homer in Missouri's game against North Central Community College as well as a two run blast in the sixth inning.

Missouri's final run of the game came by way of sophomore Ashley Fleming's (Silex, Mo.) sixth inning one out solo home run to deep center.

The Tigers, who managed 15 hits in their first game of the day, were held to only five base knocks by Heartland Community College. In turn, Missouri's Thomas held the Hawks to three singles.

The Tigers will continue their fall schedule Saturday, Oct. 3, in a doubleheader set to begin at Noon (CT) on University Field. Missouri will take on Johnson County Community College at Noon before facing Iowa Central Community College at approximately 2 p.m. (CT). Both games will be free and open to the public.
