LAWRENCE, Kan. - -
Kansas scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a double by Nick Faunce to take a 7-6 win in game one of a Sunday doubleheader in Lawrence, Kan. The Tigers and Jayhawks are playing two games Sunday after Saturday's game was postponed due to rain.
Game two of the doubleheader will start at approximately 4 p.m.
Freshman Andrew Thigpen doubled in the top of the second inning to drive in freshman Jonah Schmidt with the game's first run. Thigpen extended his hitting streak to eight games with the RBI base hit. He finished with a pair of RBI in the game.
Kansas took the lead with a two-run bottom of the fourth inning, with both runs scoring on a double from Buck Afenir.
The lead was short-lived for KU, as Mizzou sophomore Aaron Senne hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at two. The homer was Senne's 12th of the year and the 19th of his career. MU took the lead when junior Steve Gray led off the top of the sixth inning with his seventh home run of the season. Gray has homered in three of MU's last four games.
Missouri scored a second run in the sixth, as Thigpen was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk to sophomore Greg Folgia and scored on a single by junior Ryan Lollis. Lollis was 2-for-4 in the game, extending his hitting streak to six games.
The Jayhawks scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tie the game at four. Both runs were unearned as an error by the Tigers aided KU in the inning.
The Tigers quickly regained the lead by plating a run in the top of the seventh inning. With runners at second and third, Thigpen grounded to third and the Kansas third basesman Tony Thompson attempted to throw Schmidt out at home as he tried to score from third base. Schmidt was able to slide underneath the tag, scoring the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thompson and Nick Faunce hit back-to-back solo home runs to pull Kansas in front, 6-5.
Again, Missouri was quick to answer, getting a run in the top of the eighth inning, as sophomore Trevor Coleman singled to drive in Lollis to tie the game at six. KU then plated the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the inning.
Junior Rick Zagone started and went 6.1 innings, striking out five. He gave up five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits and walked two. After back-to-back singles to start the game, Zagone retired the next eight batters he faced before a pair of hits and a walk for KU in the fourth.
