Hey Everyone! First off, I would like to congratulate the Mizzou wrestling team on a great showing at the Northeast Duals in Albany this past weekend. The team went 4-0 against ODU, Brown, Harvard and Maryland with many guys beating on ranked wrestlers. Two matches that stuck out were Max's (Askren) win over second ranked Hudson Taylor of Maryland and Mike's (Chandler) win over fourth ranked J.P. O'Conner of Harvard.
Thanksgiving was a good and well needed break for me; I was able to relax and get quite a few good meals under my belt in St Louis with Todd Porter. I was not able to go home and see my family (the first year I have not spent Thanksgiving with them) but luckily Todd was kind enough to invite me home with him to spend the holidays. While we were there, we went to his old high school to get a little work out in and show a few moves to his team. This was the first time as a Mizzou wrestler I got to feel kind of like a celebrity. All the kids came up to us asking us to wrestle around with them and what we thought of this move and that.
This past week has been a good week of training for me. Monday was our day off but most of the guys who didn't go to New York got in the room for a little drill or cardio. Tuesday was an open mat in which I got another great workout with Coach Johnston. I m always ready to expect at least an hour of live whenever we work out together and I'm really starting to see the results and how much stronger my wrestling stamina has become. The rest of the week has been pretty normal just getting ready for the Northern Iowa Open this weekend. This is one of our toughest opens of the year and the first real time we get to compete against some Division I starters from other teams.
This week I have also started to study for exams. With the semester coming to a close pretty soon, I'm starting to feel my first sense of real pressure on me in the classroom since I've been in college. I feel as if my grades are good or above average right now but in a few classes I'm really having to buckle down and study to try to reach that next letter grade above. We have a team goal this year of a 3.0 GPA. I'm not one the 4.0 students on the team, but I'm at least not trying to bring the team GPA under the 3.0. I have two papers due soon and two of my finals are cumulative exams, which has me shaking in my boots a little. I have that same feeling I had the first day of class when I walk into a 400-person lecture hall. Overall, life as a freshman is pretty good right now. I'm excited to get on the mat at UNI, and for Christmas break when I get to home for the first time since I've been out here.
See all of you next week and Happy Holidays Nicky Gregoris
