BOULDER, Colo. -- Missouri senior Nate Englin (Shoreview, Minn.) won his second conference title Saturday in winning the men's shot put at the Big 12 Championships in Boulder, Colo., adding to this year's indoor crown in the same event. Englin's final toss of 61 feet, 7¾ inches (18.79m) topped the field by over 16 inches as he claimed Mizzou's fourth outdoor shot championship in the Big 12 era. In addition, sophomore Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) made a valiant attempt at the Big 12 title in the men's decathlon, but his 346-point personal best score of 7,675 came just 18 points short of the title.
Englin entered the three-throw finals in second place, trailing Nebraska's Keith Lloyd by a single centimeter. On his fifth toss, Englin reclaimed the lead with a heave of 60-4 (18.39m). In the final round, Harrison Benjamin of Texas Tech posted a throw of 60-3 (18.36m) to tease the lead. But, Englin put it out of reach his best of the day on the next-to-last-throw of the competition.
"I feel pretty good [winning both indoor and outdoor titles]," said Englin. "Keith [Lloyd] and [Harrison] Benjamin gave me a scare there, but it makes more exciting. I had a good first throw, then I tried too hard and kind of fell over. I came back and had two decent throws in the final and I was able to win it. I just need to keep doing what I've been doing and put up good marks."
Englin joins former Tigers Christian Cantwell (2001), Steve Moore (1978), Gene Crews (1965 and 1966), and Elmer Aussieker (1942) in claiming both indoor and outdoor conference shot put titles in the same year.
Saturday was also the final day of the men's decathlon. Tiger sophomore Nick Adcock and freshman Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) took the 2-3 spots with NCAA-automatic qualifying marks. Adcock's score of 7,675 topped his previous best score of 7,329, set in winning the Kansas Relays. Adcock also claimed a USATF Olympic Team Trials `B'-qualifying standard with the effort and moves to third all-time in Mizzou history with the performance. Rise's score of 7,559 toppled his previous best of 7,310.
Adcock started the day in the lead by a point (4,164), in front of Nebraska's Skyler Reising. Adcock, along with Kansas State's Moritz Cleve, set a new Big 12 meet decathlon record with a 14.36 clocking in the 110-meter hurdles, claiming his second meet record and another personal best on the weekend. Reising had a hamstring cramp and wasn't able to finish the hurdles, allowing Adcock's lead to jump to 72 points, ahead of K-State's Rok Derzanic. Rise, celebrating his home country's Independence Day, ran an 11.35 to tally a new personal best and stay in top contention.
At the discus, Rise paced the field with a 143-7 (43.76m) toss. Derzanic was unable to claim a mark, fouling on all three attempts, to allow Adcock's 116-5 (35.49m) mark to widen his lead to 154 points over Texas' Donavan Kilmartin.
At the pole vault, Kilmartin's specialty, the Longhorn was able to secure the lead for the first time with a clearance of 16-10¾ (5.15m) as Adcock cleared 13-11¼ (4.25m). Rise went two bars over his personal best with a vault over 15-3 (4.65m) to move securely into third.
At the javelin, Adcock narrowed Kilmartin's lead with a near personal best throw of 184-7 (56.26m) while Kilmartin marked 175-6 (53.50m). Rise bested the field with a season's best of 194-7 (59.32m) to close in on Adcock's score.
Adcock needed to top Kilmartin's time in the final event, the 1500-meter run, by at least 10 seconds to have a chance of taking over the lead and win the conference crown. Adcock clocked 4:49.85 and then had to wait. Kilmartin came through in 4:59.34 to take the title by a mere 18 points.
Junior JaNay Woolridge (Jessup, Md.) had a great breakthrough in the women's long jump, placing fourth, with a best of the day of 20-3¾ (6.19m) to claim a new personal best by nearly a foot and earn entry into the NCAA Regional Championships in the event.
Tiger women took the 3-4-6 spots in the women's shot put. Krishna Lee claimed third place with a 53-¼ (16.16m) marking while Shernelle Nicholls took sixth at 52-2 (15.90m). Elisha Hunt added two inches to her personal best to place eighth and improve her NCAA-regional mark.
Tipper O'Brien ran a fantastic race in the men's 1500-meter preliminary to qualify for tomorrow's finals. In a packed heat from beginning to end, O'Brien used a great kick to shore up the second and final automatic spot in his heat, edging out Texas' Kyle Miller in a 3:50.93 to 3:50.99 decision.
Trisa Nickoley advances to tomorrow's final of the women's 800 after her qualifying run of 2:09.38.
The Tiger men lead team scoring with 45 points through five of 19 scored events and lead the field in scoring 29 points in the throwing events and 14 in the combined events. The Mizzou women sit in sixth.
