Columbia, Mo. - Junior all-arounder Adrianne Perry (Columbia, Mo.) was honored by the Big 12 Conference as its Gymnast of the Week for the week of March 4 as announced by the Big 12 earlier today. The award hinges on Perry's dominating performance at the Cat Classic last Friday when she notched a 39.300 against some of the top competition in the nation, including No. 4 Michigan.
The award is Perry's first honor of the 2008 season and first since she earned the award on March 20th last season which, coincidentally, was after clashing with Michigan.
Perry, who has won three consecutive all-around titles against some of the best teams in the nation, has been one of the best gymnasts in the nation over the past several weeks. Not only has Perry been winning all-around titles, but she has been knocking off some of the best gymnasts in the nation as well.
Last week, both Sarah Curtis and Lindsey Bruck of Michigan came into the meet ranked in the nation's top 10 all-arounders at times this season. Bruck came in ranked seventh, while Curtis is a three-time Big 10 Gymnast of the Week. Perry knocked off both of them as Curtis fell just short, posting a 39.275 while Bruck tallied a 39.150. Perry also shared the beam title with sophomore teammate Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.), giving her six Cat Classic individual titles, one off the most in history, owned by Missouri's Alisha Robinson.
Perry also topped third-ranked Kiara Redmond-Sturms against Oklahoma two weeks ago as she posted a 39.375, topping Redmond-Sturms who tallied a 39.300. As if knocking off three opposing top-10 gymnasts in the last two weeks was not enough, Perry has now posted a 39.300 or better three times on the season.
Perry becomes the third Tiger to earn Conference honors this season. Junior Alicia Hatcher (Blue Springs, Mo.) earned Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week back on January 29 while Shire earned Gymnast of the Week honors on February 12.
Perry and the Tigers return to action on Saturday when they head to Illinois to take on the Illini at 2:00 p.m. (CT). Stay tuned to www.mutigers.com for all the latest on Tiger Gymnastics.
