Columbia, Mo. - The 2008 Missouri Softball team kicked off the season as the Black team defeated the Gold team 12-0 in the annual Black and Gold game, held at the Dan Devine Pavilion. The game gave fans the chance to see the debut of eight Tiger freshmen and two transfers.
The Black team got off to a quick start scoring three runs in the first two innings. University of Maryland transfer Lindsey Ubrun (Riverside, Calif.) showed the hometown fans her hitting power bringing in two runs on a on a single to left field.
The black team extended its lead in the sixth inning when senior Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) tripled to score freshman Rhea Taylor (Buford, Ga.). In the seventh inning, the Black team widened its lead even more when Katie Milles (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled to deep center bringing home two more runs. Junior Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) hit a two run single in the same inning, scoring the final two runs of the seven run seventh inning.
Led by the Black team's defense, Bruck managed to shut down the Gold team's offense, limiting them to no runs and two hits in seven innings. Bruck looked in regular season form, forcing her opponents to pull the ball to third base on numerous occasions.
The Tigers begin the 2008 season next week as they travel to Miami, Fla. to participate in the Florida International Invitational. The team will start their season against No. 15 Virginia Tech. Along with the Tigers and Hokies, the tournament includes Florida International, Texas-Arlington, and Pittsburgh.
