16th-ranked Tigers Take Down Baylor, 4-2

Sept. 30, 2007

Final Stats

Waco, Texas - The 16th-ranked University of Missouri women's soccer team (8-2-0, 2-0-0 Big 12) defeated the Baylor University Bears (6-3-2, 0-1-1 Big 12), 4-2, Sunday (Sept. 30) in Waco, Texas. Tiger junior defender Kat Tarr scored two goals on the day, sophomore Kristin Andrighetto scored the game-winner for the second consecutive game and Mizzou freshman Alysha Bonnick added a goal to help Mizzou get off to a perfect start in conference play.

"Anytime you can get a win on the road in the Big 12, you're happy," Tiger Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "Our team showed a good effort, and as you can see, Baylor gave us all we could handle."

Blitz was also proud that several different Tigers contributed to the victory.

The first and fourth goals of the game were scored by Tarr, who came into the contest with only one career goal. Tarr scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute, when she took a pass from fellow defender Lindsay McCoy and put it into the net, giving Mizzou an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers did not cool down after the first goal, as Bonnick scored her seventh of the season less than five minutes after Tarr's. Andrighetto passed the ball to Bonnick, who shot it past Baylor goalkeeper Ashley Noah to give Mizzou a 2-0 lead. Bonnick's seventh goal is the highest total for a Mizzou freshman since Jennifer Nobis scored eight in 2002.

The Tiger defense kept the Bears off of the scoreboard the entire first half and held Baylor to just one shot in the first period.

Mizzou kept the 2-0 advantage through halftime, but after the break, the Bears upped the intensity. Baylor's Nikki Watson took the opening kick down the field, into the box, where she was fouled by Tarr. The foul gave Baylor midfielder Lotto Smith a chance to bring the Bears to within one goal with a penalty kick. Smith kicked it on goal, and Tiger goalkeeper Mallory Forst deflected the shot out of bounds. Baylor took a corner kick after Forst hit the ball out of bounds, but it hit the top of the goal, keeping the Bears off the scoreboard.

The Tigers added to their 2-0 lead about 15 minutes later, when Andrighetto scored her ninth goal of the season in the 60th minute. Bonnick kicked the ball past Noah, inside the box, where Andrighetto picked it up and shot it into the open net. Baylor would score two more goals on the game, making Andrighetto's goal the game-winner, her second of the weekend and third of the season.

Baylor scored its first goal in the 64th minute, as Pat Roscovius headed the ball off the post and Lara Doherty gathered it and put it past Forst for her first goal of the year. The score brought the Bears to within two goals, at 3-1.

In the 77th minute, Tiger sophomore Michelle Collins dribbled into the box and was fouled by Laura Brock. Tarr took the penalty kick, and drove it past Noah for her second goal of the game and third of the season. The Tigers led comfortably, 4-1.

Just 53 seconds later, at the 77:00 mark, Baylor's Rose Zapata brought the bears to within 4-2 as she put a free kick past Tasha Dittamore, who came into the game after Tarr's goal. Zapata kicked the ball from about 25 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal to bring the Bears to within two scores, once again.

The Baylor goal was the last shot the Tiger defense gave up all game, preserving the lead and the victory for Mizzou.

NOTES:

With Mizzou's four goals today, the 2007 Tigers tied last year's team's total of 33.

Mizzou is 2-0 in the conference for the first time since 2000, when the Tigers won their first two games against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Andrighetto's ninth goal of the season ties her for 10th on Mizzou's all-time leader board with Jennifer Nobis (2004) and Melissa Peabody (2002, 2001).

Tiger sophomore forward Michelle Collins had two close chances Sunday. Her shot in the 84th minute hit the post and her attempt in the 90th minute hit the crossbar. She was the player that was fouled in the 77th minute, which gave Tarr her penalty kick.

The Mizzou win is Baylor's first home loss of the season. They were 4-0-1 at home before Sunday's game.

The Bears are now 0-1-1 after tying Kansas, 2-2, Friday (Sept. 28) in their conference opener.

UP NEXT: The Tigers will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face the Texas Tech Lady Raiders next Friday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m. Mizzou's next two home games are Oct. 12 and 14 when they host Oklahoma and 13th-ranked Oklahoma State.
