Mizzou senior John Kelly finished as the Low Amateur at the Masters, after he matched his 77 in the opening round with a 77 in round two on Friday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Kelly missed the cut by just two shots.
Kelly finishes as the Low Amateur out of the five amateurs in the tournament, as his 154 two-round score was two shots better than Richie Ramsay, who Kelly lost to in the championship match of last summer's U.S. Amateur Championship. However, to receive the Masters Low Amateur award and receive the Silver Cup, Kelly had to make the 36-hole cut today.
In Friday's round, Kelly was one-under par on the round after 10 holes, which put him at four-over for the tournament and at the time was in a tie with Tiger Woods. As he did on Thursday, Kelly ran in to difficulty starting the back nine, taking a triple bogie on the 11th hole and a bogie on 12. He then would birdie the 13th hole.
"It was deja vu" said Kelly. "I did well on the front, 11 and 12 kicked my butt again".
Kelly qualified for the Masters after his runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur. In order to play the weekend, Kelly needed to finish Friday within 10 strokes of the lead or be in the top 44 players (including ties).
"This was a great learning experience" said Kelly. "I can do nothing but build from this".
