Maricopa, Ariz. – The Mizzou men's golf team sits in first place through the opening round of the National Golf Invitational, carding the fifth-best 18-hole score in school history on Friday.
The Tigers opened the tournament with an 18-under 270 – tied for the fifth-best single round and best since also recording a 270 at the 2023 Tiger Intercollegiate. The last time Mizzou shot better than 270 was when it posted a school-record score of 263 at the Jackrabbit Invitational in 2010.
Mizzou is one shot in front of second-place Grand Canyon, who recorded a score of -17 through 18 holes, followed by Rhode Island (-14) and Nevada (-14) in third place.
All five Tigers in action currently sit in the top 15 in the 10-team field with junior Brock Snyder leading the way in fourth place with a six-under tally. His score of 66 matches his collegiate-best round, accomplishing the feat for the fourth time. Overall, the junior started strong with birdies on the first three holes before adding three more in a four-hole stretch on the back nine.
Three Tigers are tied for second on the team with a four-under 68 as Virgilio Paz, Esteban Cruz Bonilla and Reese Roberts all sit in ninth place. Roberts led Mizzou with seven bridies on the day with Paz recording six and Cruz Bonilla registering five plus one eagle.
Trent Mierl rounded out the top five for Mizzou with a three-under 69, adding three birdies and one eagle.
Round two is set for Saturday morning with the Tigers teeing off at 11:25 a.m. CT.
