COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri softball team improved to 8-6 on the season as it topped in-state rival St. Louis University, 11-3 to sweep the double header at the Dan Devine Pavilion. Hitting leadoff, senior Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) was a double away from hitting for the cycle as she notched a homerun in the second inning, a triple in the third inning and a single in the fourth inning. Bowers tallied two RBI, going three for three with a walk and scoring four runs. Earning the win, junior hurler Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) pitched five innings striking out two and allowing three runs. The game was Bruck's first complete game of the season.
The Tigers used a six-run third inning to separate themselves from the Billikens. Junior outfielder Sara Simons (Kearney, Mo.) started the rally with a two-run double to right center. Bowers continued the melee during the next at-bat with a triple of her own bringing home Simons. Senior catcher A.J. White added to the damage in the third as she blasted a two run single down the left field line.
Also having a big game for the Tigers was junior Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.). Renth went three for three at the plate earning two RBI's and scoring a run of her own. Simons, who jump started the rally in the third also added two runs and went two of three at the plate.
Needing only five innings for both victories in the double header, the Tigers now improve to 52-2 all time against SLU with the sweep. The Tigers will be back in action this weekend when they head to Fayetteville, Ark. to participate in the Clarion Inn Lady `Back Invitational. They will open the tournament against in state rival UMKC, who they bested in a double header on Feb. 14.
