
Stephen F. Austin Earns 84-81 Overtime Win Over Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Stephen F. Austin (3-5) outscored the Missouri women's basketball team (5-4) 50-36 in the second half to claim the CenturyTel Tiger Tournament title in a come-from-behind 84-81 overtime victory on Saturday night at Mizzou Arena.
Down by 12, 68-56, after sophomore Marissa Scott hit a 3-pointer with 7:09 left in regulation, the Ladyjacks chipped away at the Tiger lead and got within three, 74-71 with 2:58 remaining. After junior Alyssa Hollins nailed a jumper, Stephen F. Austin got a jumper from Whitney Cormier at the 1:21 mark and Jessica Gaines tied the game at 76-76 on a three with 31 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Ladyjack Nikki Carr hit a 3-pointer 1:31 into overtime but junior Alyssa Hollins got Missouri within one, 80-79, with just over two minutes left. The Tigers could not convert their opportunities and the Ladyjacks held on for an 84-81 overtime victory.
Both teams kept things close early and were knotted up at 13-13 with 12:58 left in the half before the Tigers ran off a 7-0 run over the next 2:09, capped off when freshman RaeShara Brown found Jones for a layup.
Mizzou continued to dominate the game, eventually building a 17-point advantage, 40-23, after sophomore Toy Richbow hit a layup off an assist from sophomore Jessra Johnson with 44 seconds left in the first frame. Stephen F. Austin's Nikki Carr hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the squads into the half with Mizzou on top 43-25.
A layup from Richbow just 1:10 into the second frame gave the Tigers a 44-26 lead but Stephen F. Austin responded with a 19-5 run after Jordan Ford made a jumper with 12:26 remaining to cut Mizzou's lead to 49-44.
Johnson had a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers while Jones posted 17 points and nine boards and Hollins notched 16 points. Sophomore Marissa Scott nailed three 3-pointers for a career high nine points and Richbow dished out seven assists.
Mizzou returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. in a game with the UMKC Kangaroos at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers then face Illinois at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Mizzou Arena.
