COLUMBIA, Mo. - Despite making 11 3-pointers in the contest, the Missouri women's basketball team fell to Arkansas 66-53 on Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers' 3-point success kept them within striking distance of the Lady Razorbacks for must of the contest but Arkansas utilized a 15-3 run over the final 6:09 to seal its victory.
Junior guard Alyssa Hollins led Mizzou (3-3) with 20 points, including six threes, while sophomore forward Jessra Johnson had 16 points. Additionally, sophomore Marissa Scott and freshman Shakara Jones each pulled down nine rebounds.
Lauren Ervin paced Arkansas (7-0) with 20 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists and Whitney Jones added 17 points and 12 boards.
"Arkansas is obviously very athletic and has a great inside game that we never really found an answer for," said Missouri Head Coach Cindy Stein. "I did feel that our kids kept battling and kept coming back so I give them credit for that. We're just going to continue to learn from these moments and continue to get better."
Arkansas jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to open the game and kept the Tigers at bay for most of the half. Mizzou got within one, 11-10, on a 3-pointer from Johnson with 10:28 left in the frame and again at the 4:52 mark after a three from sophomore Toy Richbow.
The Tigers used another trey, this time by freshman Jasmyn Otote, and two free throws by Johnson to pull even with the Lady Razorbacks at 25-25 with 2:33 remaining in the first half. However, Arkansas went on a 6-0 run to close out the first frame and enter the second half with a 31-25 advantage.
A 3-pointer by Marissa Scott and a jumper by Hollins at the 12:56 cut Arkansas' lead to two at 41-39. After the Lady Razorbacks increased their advantage to four, 49-45, Johnson sank two free throws to cut Mizzou's deficit back to two. Arkansas responded with a jumper from Jones but sophomore forward Amanda Hanneman sank Mizzou's 11th three of the evening to bring Missouri within one, 51-50, with 6:09 left in the game.
Arkansas responded with a 15-3 run to close out the game and record a 66-53 victory.
Mizzou returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. for a contest against Texas State at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers then host the Missouri Tiger Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8. Alcorn and Stephen F. Austin start things off at 5 p.m. on Friday while Missouri will face Mississippi Valley State after the first contest. Missouri will play in the 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday night no matter if the team is in the championship or consolation contest. Saturday's other game will tip-off at the conclusion of the Missouri's game.
