One day after University of Missouri senior SS Pig Brown won Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the Adel, Ga., native has reeled in another honor, this one of the national variety. 

Brown was named today as the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the Football Writers' Association of American and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Brown was honored for his outstanding play as he helped lead Mizzou to a 40-34 season-opening victory over Illinois last Saturday.

Brown gathered three turnovers on the day, including two fumble recoveries (one of which he returned 100 yards for a touchdown that tied the NCAA record for longest fumble return), and a game-saving interception that came at the MU 1-yardline with just :51 seconds remaining in the game.  In all, Brown had five tackles, including one that went for a loss.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound safety will be added to the 2007 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List.  The trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 3 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.  Last year's winner was Ohio State LB James Laurinaitis.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1941, consists of more than 1,000 men and women across North America who cover college football for a living. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game day operations, major awards, a national poll and its annual All-America team.
