COLUMBIA, Mo.--The indoor track and field season really starts to cook for Mizzou this weekend with a visit to Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational. With only three meets before the Big 12 Indoor Championships, tune-up time is quickly disappearing. Also this weekend, post-collegians Christian Cantwell and Derrick Peterson travel to 100th Millrose Games.

Mizzou on the Move!
The Mizzou track and field squad verified a change of plans on Tuesday. Instead of splitting the squad to both the Indiana Relays and the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame, the coaches decided to stick with the Meyo for the whole squad this weekend. Mizzou will go to Notre Dame's Invite meet for the third-consecutive year.
Friday the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will jump out his burrow and let us all know how long the remainder of this winter season will be. No rodent needed here to know that the indoor track and field season is already six weeks away from ending. Serious attempts at NCAA qualifying in distance events will begin this weekend when the Tigers visit the Meyo Invitational, followed by next weekends' visit to the Iowa State Classic.
Why Notre Dame and Iowa State? Well, they have oversized tracks, one's that are over 200 meters. Its significance lies in the races on the track, as with a longer course comes a wider turn radius and less effort to turn around those corners resulting in better times and a better chance to earn NCAA qualification marks. Notre Dame's Loftus Center track is 354 yards in length, or one-fifth of a mile, making it one of the largest indoor tracks in the country. The Loftus Center's track surrounds Meyo Field, the Irish indoor football practice faculty.
Look farther below for the Tigers' best marks at the Meyo since 2002.
Vaulting to New Heights
Freshman Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) pole vaulted to a Mizzou indoor freshman record and indoor personal best of 16-6¾ (5.05m) last weekend at Purdue's Gene Edmonds Cup and attempted the bar at 17-¾ (5.20m), a standard that would tie him for the all-time Mizzou indoor record in the event.
When Hancock learned the news of the switch to Notre Dame, he was more than excited. And for what reason? The Loftus Center uses an elevated runway for the pole vault event, laid on top of the Irish's indoor football practice facility's FieldTurf.
Coming straight from high school, one would not think Hancock would normally get a lot of experience on such an apparatus. But ...
"I really like elevated runways. I have one at home," said Hancock.
Come to think of it, Hancock's family farm is well equipped for a burgeoning pole vaulter. The elevated runway is made of 2-by-4s and with a plywood surface. His indoor facility is better known as "the barn". But ...
"The rafters are only like 15 feet, so I can only do `short-approaches' in there," said the four-time MSHSAA Champion.
Don't ask who the spectators are.
The Monroe City native has, in true form, become an astute student of the event. Instead of watching the latest in great cinema on his portable DVD player on bus trips, he reaches for video of elite pole-vaulting competitions. Watching, for example, the 2004 Olympic Games showdown, over ... and over ... and over, again.
The Brian Hancock story will likely be a one we revisit, over ... and over ... and over, again.
Provisionally Speaking
Along with Dailey and Rohr's NCAA provisional marks in the men's weight throw. School-record holder Elisha Hunt has a provisional-qualifying mark in the women's weight throw, which currently places her in the top 10 in the nation in the event.
