COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri track and field team opened the 2007 indoor season on Friday by hosting the 21st Annual Missouri Invitational. Tiger junior Elisha Hunt (Linn, Mo.) had the performance of the day in breaking her own Missouri school record, adding Fieldhouse and meet records as well in the women's weight throw.
Hunt, on the last throw of the competition, marked a 64 foot, ¼ inch (19.51m) strike to win the competition and earned an NCAA-provisional qualifying mark in doing so.
Hunt's finish was part of a top-four sweep by Missouri in the event. Sophomore Krishna Lee (Kansas City, Mo.) placed second, adding over two feet to her personal best to mark 59-10¼ (18.24m). Transfer Shernelle Nicholls finished third with a new personal best of 58-1¼ (17.71m). Junior Elizabeth Robe was fourth.
Mizzou also swept the top-three collegiate spots in the women's shot. Nicholls marked 49-7¾ (15.13m) to finish as the top collegian. Lee and Robe were the second and third collegiate finishers.
Junior Trisa Nickoley won the women's 800-meter run, clocking 2:13.87. Nickoley was also on the distance medley relay that won in 12:02.35.
On the men's side, senior Tipper O'Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.) was the winner in the men's 1000-meter run, clocking 2:29.17. Tim Ross won the men's 3000 in 8:17.51.
The Tigers took the top two spots in the men's pole vault. Senior Will Drover (Camdenton, Mo.) and freshman Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) both cleared 15-7 (4.90m). Drover was declared the winner on a clean-jumping plate before the 15-7 bar.
Sophomore Chris Rohr (Lee's Summit, Mo.) won the men's weight throw with an NCAA-provisional qualifying mark of 67-2¼ (20.48m). Bobby Musil was second at 62-4.
Tyler Dailey won the men's shot put on his final throw, marking 56-8 (17.27m). Rohr was second at 55-11¾ (17.06m).
The Tigers hit the road next weekend and travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big 12-Mountain West Challenge.
